BAB: Kari White of Mayor B!

Kari White, we can’t even begin to describe how excited we are to have you featured as our Bowed Arrows Babe of the month! Jenna has known Kari for over 10 years and when we first learned about her project, Mayor B, we just couldn’t get enough.
BA: Mayor B. is essentially insanely creative and adorable pictures of your French Bulldog, so what was the inspiration behind it? Did you always have plans of selling the artwork or did it start as fun?

KW: It started as a fun project, I had a camera and started taking photos of my dog Rambo. I gave them out as presents but then people started to take notice and want them for their homes. The demand grew so I made large prints with custom frames and resin and began to sell them here in Los Angeles. Obviously there was a lot of trial and error, but I learned the craft from my circle of artistic friends.

From there I started Mayor B. Not just as a company, but more an interpretation of my dogs personality. He’s a boss, and I felt like when it came to lifestyle products he deserved so much more than anything I could buy. I started making him custom leather and brass collars, modified vintage pieces, and handmade leather harnesses. People started to take notice and I realized that I wasn’t alone in thinking my dog was more than just a pet.

BA: We totally understand that! We are huge dog lovers here at Bowed Arrows. Tell us more about your charming pup!

KW: I got Rambo as a puppy, he’s my Christmas baby. I was always into photography and when Rambo was a puppy I tried dressing him up just to see what would happen. He would sit there with an air of confidence (that can easily be mistaken for arrogance). He was so human like, he looked good and he knew it…ha! Pet photography can be so campy, and I was hoping to make photos that would put you in a good mood without being silly. I know I’m not the only one who sees a picture of their pet and smiles and I wanted to share that with those around me.

BA: What does a day in the life of Kari White and Mayor B. entail?

KW: I work in an industrial space in downtown owned by my friends at Croft House. They design and build modern furniture here in LA and have been extremely helpful with Mayor B. We have a shared vision of working with skilled craftsmen to make quality goods. Its an inspiring environment because of the industrial aesthetic. There’s something about being near band saws and drill presses that fits so well with Mayor B.

BA: What’s your favorite Mayor B. shot?

KW: My favorite piece is the “Prince of Pop” inspired by Warhol.  For some reason it makes me question my sanity hahahaha!

BA: What’s next for you and Mayor B?

KW: Everything we have been creating is all for the love of our pets. Now we are working on spreading the message and building a community of like minded friends. We have retail partnerships here in Los Angeles that are fantastic and have been providing us with support and encouragement and plan on expanding east to NYC and Minneapolis in the future. New products like dog bowls, food storage, collars and leashes are around the corner. Overall I love creating Mayor B, it makes me happy and inspired and I love being able to share that with others.

BA: What did you want to be when you grew up?

KW: I always wanted to have my own cooking show like Paula Dean & The Barefoot Contessa…. I used to make my brothers film me making chicken and lasagna and stuff…I called it ”Kooking with Kari”  hahaha!

(We have tried a few of the recipes…delicious!)

BA: What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?

KW: I think confidence obviously comes from owning your strengths, but also being able to recognize your weaknesses and having the guts to try and strengthen them.

FullSizeRender (57)

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

KW: I’m really into nutrition and good fats…I think making time to eat healthy is key when you’re busy and stressed out. What you put in your body reflects your mood and your energy, and I think its all about staying consistent and as close to the ground as possible, so staying away from a lot of sugar and processed crap.  I also swear by brain foods like avocados and fish oil!

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

KW: Definitely reading…I’m a total sci-fi / fantasy book nerd so its my escape.

BA: And how about pumping yourself up?

KW: I think playing soccer, surfing, and physical activities are when I do most of my thinking. I have a ton of energy so sometimes I need to just go on a hike or kick the ball around with my friends and it really motivates me with work. My biggest inspiration comes when I make time to go antique shopping.

mayorb 3

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

KW: Metal work. I learned how to weld from one of my friends and completely out of control with it. Its like an extreme version of a glue gun hahaha

BA: I’m sure we have some curious readers, so how can they get Mayor B. artwork and clothing?

KW: Everything is up on my site I also love special projects with my art, so feel free to email me.

BAB: Jen Herter of Macronage

Babes, today we are introducing you to Jen Herter of Macoranage in San Diego. We have had the pleasure of knowing Jen since junior high school and have loved watching her journey from turning her passion into a business. Meet Jen!

BA: Where did you first get the inspiration to start your own business?

J: I’ve always loved business in general which is why I got my degree in Business Administration from Point Loma Nazarene University. However, I knew that in order to start my own business and have it be successful it would have to be something that I was truly passionate about. I’ve always loved cooking and good food, but it wasn’t until after college that I really focused in on pastry. I got inspired by the amazing restaurants in San Diego and watching way too much Food Network so finally I decided I wanted to start a bakery. In order to learn the technique and get the knowledge I would need to run a bakery, I attend The French Pastry School in Chicago. It was at pastry school when I decided to focus on french macarons.

BA: The macarons always look so delicious. Is that just your speciality or do you strictly stick to macarons?

J: Right now I only do macarons. Macarons are tricky to make so I like the challenge and niche market. Plus focusing on just macarons allows me to really play with flavor and designs. We offer macarons a la cart, macaron favors and macaron towers. I’ve always taken the approach that it’s better to do one thing exceptionally well than a bunch of things just average.

BA: What are some challenges you faced starting a company on your own?

J: It’s always a lot more work and a lot more money than you expect it to be. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out how to get started. It truly has to be a labor of love.

BA: You are based in San Diego but do you have any plans of getting your delicious treats to other areas?

J: We currently serve the San Diego and Temecula area. At this time, there’s more than enough business for me in just these locations!

BA: Where should the fine people of San Diego go to grab some yummy macarons?

J: Because we completely customize the macarons for each order, we focus on weddings and events only. We have a minimum order of 50 macarons or more which includes free delivery within San Diego county. We typically set up a tasting with customers prior to their wedding or event where they can try 5 flavors. At the tasting we discuss more about their wedding/event and the specifics.

BA: Tell us about pastry school? That sounds fun…and dangerous.

J: It was fun and dangerous because you take home everything you make and let me just say, my diet was about 90% carbs and sugar during that time. So of course it was amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. It also didn’t hurt that it was in Chicago so I constantly had friends visit me.

BA: You recently got married. Is your husband your guinea pig for new recipes?

J: Most definitely, although he’s not the best judge because he says “everything you touch turns to gold”. So sweet, but so not true.

BA: Was starting your own company always a dream of yours?

J: YES!!!!

BA: What’s next for you and Macaronage?

J: I plan on continuing to grow my business in the weddings and events markets. I really enjoy working with brides and grooms and it’s such a huge industry.

BA: What are some tricks you use for balancing a busy life?

J: Hahaha I wish I knew. It helps that I really like being busy and I love being creative. Sometimes I do get overwhelmed but I’ve been getting better at saying “no” to things as of late.

BA: Any healthy tips for the rest of us sweets lovers?

J: Everything in moderation. I love sweets and eat dessert every day but I try to limit the portion size of my dessert. That means 1 or 2 macarons instead of 3 or 4. Also, exercise is just a good thing.

BA: What’s your favorite way to pump yourself or turn your mood around?

J: Working out always turns my frown upside down. Also, creative projects in general help me unwind most of the time.

BA: What about your favorite way to wind down?

J: My husband and I love TV. I know that’s not a great thing to admit to but we have a few shows we really enjoy watching together. (BA says this in moderation isn’t such a bad thing!)

BA: Best advice you were ever given?

J: I think my parents really did a good job encouraging me to take educated risks. Do your research and plan first but don’t be afraid to trust your gut. Failing is just a learning experience.

BA: Who is your biggest inspiration?

J: I don’t really have one person that inspires me except for Jesus. I think there are pieces of a lot of great people that inspire me in different ways. I want to take the best qualities from all the great people around me and become that person.

BA: If you could tell all women and girls everywhere one thing, what would it be?

J: You’ve got to be your own biggest fan. You are valuable and talented and full of potential so act like it.

BAB: Lauryn Evarts of The Skinny Confidential

Everyone needs to stop what they are doing and head to Amazon to purchase Lauryn Evart’s book, The Skinny Confidential.

Like, no joke. Her stuff is real and it’s good.

She has everyday tips for eating right, exercising, and just living that beautiful life you were all made to do!

She’s a total babe but she works her buns off.

Our favorite thing about her is that she is alllllll about moderation. She eats hot cheetos for gosh sake! And she tells it like it is. She has figured out some KILLER ways to live life in a healthy, fun way and she shares them with the world in her book.

Lauryn is the type of woman that encourages you to not be too hard on yourself and to not expect your life to change overnight. You will have days where you would rather go to happy hour than the gym, you will cheat a little too much, you will eat a few too many oreos when you are PMS-ing. Lauryn puts it best, “Life is too short to obsess over foods in a negative way.” Give yourself a break and make better decisions tomorrow.

Another thing we just love about her…she’s not one of those girls who hides anything from her readers. She gives away all her secrets because she wants to actually help people. Like, how often do you actually find that?!

Chantelly likes to think of her as her spirit animal and has probably read her book too many times to keep track of. She has some great strength training workouts in there that Chantelly loves to do outside in her backyard. In her bathing suit. With a hat, glasses and tons of SPF of course! But gotta get that tan onnn.

Her recipes are perfect for the everyday busy girl. They are super quick but also super healthy and good for you. One of our fave recipes from the “Skinny Recipes That Will Change Your Freaking Life” chapter is the Two-Ingredient Pancakes. Like, what?!! TWO INGREDIENTS?! Who doesn’t have time for that?! And they are totally, 100% guilt-free!

We cannot forget to mention her Kombucha Spritzer because let’s be honest, we loveeee our Champagne and to be able to drink it with some Kombucha makes it healthier, right?! Jenna says yes, very much YES. Also, Blood Orange skinny margs. Tequila was our first love, when we were 19 and thought dancing on bars and stealing cowboy hats from rodeo cowboys in Rosarito was actually a good idea. We still love tequila, just -in moderation- and without mechanical bulls anywhere near.

TSC - YouTube

Anyway, we could go on and on and on but we probably should let you all check it out for yourselves.

There is so much in there about beauty, fashion and how to keep it spicy with your loverboy! MeOWW.

(And stay tuned to see how you can win the TSC guide later this week!)

But first, meet the babe behind it all!

We had the opportunity to meet Lauryn earlier this Summer and ask her a few questions to show you guys exactly why she’s a total Bowed Arrow Babe. So, lady loves, meet Lauryn!

BA: We’ve been following your story for awhile now and are always SO blown away by everything you do. You kill it at everything business and life. Who has been your biggest inspiration throughout it all?

Lauryn: Thank you, thank you! My biggest inspiration comes from all different sorts of things/people. It’s kind of like a big puzzle with a ton of pieces. I admire my fiance’s business sense, my dad’s optimism, my grandma’s spirit, etc. My inspiration also comes from my readers, Pinterest, Instagram, other entrepreneurs, magazines, online articles, friends, etc.

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to work hard towards your dreams?

Lauryn: I think of it as brushing my teeth. I just do it! It’s a lot of discipline but at the end of the day you’re working towards YOUR goals and not someone else’s, so it makes it easier to kick your ass into gear.

I also make sure I’m stocked on cold brew coffee, a clean work space, & daily inspirations. I have an awesome team of people helping me daily. Delegating is very important when building a company. I used to think I could do it all, AND I definitely CANNOT. Ha! Having good people around you makes all the difference.

BA: What has been your biggest struggle to get to where you are now? And how did you overcome it?

Lauryn: Probably having to accept I can’t control everything. That was a big lesson.

Also, juggling a balance between work and life has been extremely difficult. I’m a work in progress and constantly trying to not work 24 hours a day. Sometimes I over do it and need to take a break. It’s important to separate work and personal life. Not everything is an Instagram, ha!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Lauryn: I have always been a fan of collaborating, not competing. There’s PLENTY of room at the top and everyone is different. Collaborating is so important and it’s fun! Sharing women’s tips and tricks from all over the world is what The Skinny Confidential is all about. I’m a big fan of building women up, not tearing them down.

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Lauryn: Fake it until you make it!! We all have shitty days. We all have unfortunate circumstances. FAKE it. Make it work until it does. There’s a whole chapter in The Skinny Confidential book on this.

Also, finding your niche and sticking to it is super important. Start small, grow big.

BA: What’s next for you?

Lauryn: I am working on my website re-design with my blog design company, Blog-doo. It’s taken 7 months (I am a HUGE procrastinator) so I’m getting antsy! I want it to be super simple with a touch of flair.

I recently launched The Bombshell Body Guide, a 28 week fitness program & social network of women looking to kickstart a healthy lifestyle.

Also, I’m very much into YouTube right now, I’ll be posting a ton of videos so stay tuned!

Eventually I would love to move into products and another book.

“Be the best version of you. Even if you have to fake it for a while.”

-Lauryn Evarts, TSC

So that’s a little bit on Lauryn, one of our biggest inspirations! Be sure to follow her if you don’t already! She serves some great daily inspo and her blog posts will make you giggle a little.

And stay tuned for a fun giveaway coming to you all on Friday! ♥

Bowed Arrow Babe: Karina of Maven Boutique LA

We all love clothes and fun, right?! Karina brings both elements into her new business, Maven Boutique LA, by holding pop-up shops at different locations throughout Orange County and Los Angeles. She’s done private residence events which turned out FAB and then she had a few weekends in an awesome gallery in Malibu. This past weekend she held an event in Beverly Hills at a braid bar called Assembly Salon and offered free manis with every purchase! And this weekend (just in time for V-Day!) she is putting on a fashion show at Social Dry Lounge in Orange County! We will most definitely be there getting blow-outs, sipping champagne and shopping! We are all about loving ourselves on Valentine’s Day so come out and join us!

Now, time to meet the hard-working beauty behind it all!

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Karina: Well, first I just wanted to say thank you to Bowed Arrows for featuring Maven Boutique LA! My name is Karina Dyk and I’m the owner of the small Pop-Up shop. A pop-up shop sets up a store and fully takes over an empty space for a certain amount of time. What is most fun about my job is visiting different parts of the city and getting to know the people. It’s a perfect fit for me because I’ve always loved traveling and find so much beauty in my surroundings. I’ve been to over 40 states in the US, and visited different countries in South America, and Asia. My boyfriend and I are planning to go to Bali next year which is also very exciting! It’s truly the moments in my life where I’ve felt most vibrant and alive!

{Def one of our fav couples!}

BA: Tell us how Maven Boutique came to be.

Karina: Growing up my dad was an entrepreneur, as I watched his businesses mature I always knew someday I wanted to open up my own business. It took almost 30 years for me to truly decide what this business would be and how to get the courage to create it. I think the turning point came last fall when a co-worker of mine was questioning what he was doing with his life. Our conversation stuck with me for the next couple of months. Gradually I started to feel truly reinvigorated and found the energy to do something I loved with my time.

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and Maven.

Karina: Immediately when I came to the decision that I wanted to open a boutique, I knew I wanted to use this platform to support fashion designers, and other artisans. I became passionate about this during business school at my university where my professor taught me about Micro-financing businesses as a way to fight worldwide poverty. I got the opportunity, when I was 25 years old, and made the decision to grant my first loan to a shoemaker in Ecuador and later did grant writing for the organization. It was a rewarding experience to know that I contributed to people’s well-being and ability to create a better life for themselves and their families.

As far as the concept for Maven, I wanted to style the American woman and carry affordable clothing that was still made from quality fabrics. I like to think our Maven girl is refined and sophisticated, yet down-to-earth and fun. I believe that clothing should be cute, comfortable, and sexy to make girls feel good about themselves; both at work and on the weekends.

Maven Pop-Up Shop

BA: Where did your passion for fashion originate?

Karina:  My love for fashion was inherent since I was a little girl. While my sister was outside playing, I was in my bedroom playing dress up with Barbie’s and American Girls. I wanted to pick out their outfits, give them haircuts, and even give them makeup to make them look more beautiful. I am also a naturally creative person, and loved pairing colors and patterns. I loved drawing, reading and creating at a young age. As I grew up that energy turned into making collages, cooking, reading, and photography, and soon I wanted to be a range of professions in the industry; everything from a model to a cosmetologist to a magazine editor and a fashion designer.

Growing up, I love writing, drawing, painting, and pondering the world. I’ve always identified the struggle that comes from being a creative type, and seeing the world differently than other people. At first I hated it because it set me apart from other people. It took until recently to begin actually enjoying it and loving and accepting myself unconditionally.

BA: What are some of your favorite go-to pieces?

Karina: My philosophy is when you don’t know what to wear, stick with neutrals and accessorize. And if it’s cold put on a trench coat!

BA: What fashion trend are you currently obsessing over?

Karina: Yellow Pullover Sweaters!

BA: Any styling/fashion tips you have to share with us?

Karina: Tailor your clothes when you can, you’ll look prettier, feel better, and save money.

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to work hard towards your dreams?

Karina: My support group keeps me energized when I feel tired or discouraged. This includes my friends, family, fans, all the followers on Facebook and Instagram. A few friends have told me they are inspired to start their own businesses because of Maven and that is the best compliment I could ask for! Excitement is contagious and as they begin their journey, it inspires me all over again!

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey thus far?

Karina: My first buy. I was so nervous about choosing the wrong pieces, and committing to a collection seemed impossible. I’m an anxious person and I am slow to make decisions, however ultimately I learned that getting my feet wet was going to hold me back and I had to jump in head first.

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Karina: Despite LOVING my job, there have been several specific times where I feel completely depleted physically and emotionally. Running a business is an all-consuming, life disrupting activity. In the past 6 months, I have made significant sacrifices: financially, professionally, and socially that I was in no way prepared for all with no guarantee that this endeavor will prove to be more than a hobby. I have learned to function on very little sleep, and very large shots of caffeine. I have doubted myself, had others doubt me, stumbled, made numerous mistakes, laughed, cried, and interrupted the lives of my family and friends for this dream, and yet, still I would say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

BA: What does a day in the life of Karina entail?

Karina: Waking up to an Americano and taking Miles, my Yorkie, on a walk. From there, everyday is different. I spend most of my time bookkeeping, preparing shipments and determined buys for the next season. I also manage the social media, website and the logistics for our Pop-Up events. Its pretty hectic but I love it! The day winds down by spending time with my boyfriend or dinner with friends.

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Karina: Love yourself. Trust your Gut. I don’t think there’s one path for building confidence, but if you master those two you’re on your way.

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Karina: Shopping and tea!

BA: And how about your favorite way to pump yourself up?

Karina: Turning up the music!

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

KarinaLights by Ellie Goulding. I loved it the first time I heard it, and the lyrics encompass my journey so far.

BA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Karina: If you want to make it in a man’s world, speak up in the first fifteen minutes or you’ll end up refilling the coffee.

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Karina: Hand chains!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Karina: Celebrating one another rather than competing.

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Karina: Be kind to yourself.

BA: What’s next for you?

Karina: I’m looking forward to introducing children’s clothing later this year and celebrating my thirtieth birthday!!!

Woohoo! You’re a total Babe and we are so excited for you and your future with Maven. We LOVE the philosophy behind it and cannot wait for all the shopping adventures with you, girl!

Be sure to follow Karina & Maven Boutique LA. She puts together a ton of fun events. This weekend we will be hanging out at Social Dry Lounge in Orange County! Blowouts and shopping?! What could be more fun? Especially in time to pamper yourself for L-O-V-E day!

Maven Boutique LA: Get your shopping on!

Bowed Arrow Babe: Kylie of Once Upon A Blond

Kylie is an absolute doll! We stumbled upon her on Instagram and have been huge fans ever since! She runs Once Upon a Blond and creates the most amazing recipes! And they are all SO healthy! We have definitely tried quite a few of them and they are to die for!  Not only is she a total doll but she always has the sweetest heart. She is a total Bowed Arrow Babe and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to her!

Sooo here you go…meet Kylie! ♥

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Kylie: I’m Kylie, a 23 year old blogger, gymnastics teacher, model and life enthusiast living in San Diego, CA. I graduated with a Bachelors in Criminology, and have a huge passion for health and fitness. Because I love learning I knew I couldn’t stop at a Bachelors so now I’m on my way to getting my Fitness/Exercise Therapist, Nutrition, and Personal Trainer certification. I absolutely love being outdoors, my fav sports are surfing, motocross and soccer, plus I’m a total adrenaline junkie who’s completely obsessed with tigers, traveling, the ocean, and bare feet. When I’m home I’m usually creating some crazy healthy recipe… thankfully I have my wonderful Fiance as a taste tester :)

BA: Tell us how Once Upon A Blond came to be.

Kylie: I started Once Upon A Blond as a way to share my love and passion for living a healthy balanced lifestyle and to help others along their unique journeys, and I am SO glad I did! I absolutely love the community and friendships I’ve made with so many beautiful people.

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and Once Upon A Blond.

Kylie: Each day I am constantly learning, experiencing and growing into the best me that I can be and I hope Once Upon A Blond reflects that. My goal is that Once Upon A Blond not only becomes a site where you find healthy recipes, but a place of motivation, encouragement, and knowledge. I want each and every one of my followers to feel inspired, motivated, and completely capable of accomplishing their dreams.

[How amazing does this salad look?! Kylie rocks!]

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey?

Kylie: I would have to say the most memorable moment throughout my blogging journey was the first email I received asking for advice. I think it takes such a strong person to ask others for help and encouragement and that’s exactly why I created Once Upon A Blond in the first place.

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Kylie: Definitely finding time. Life can be so busy and unexpected that not everything always goes as planned. On my journey of health, fitness and blogging there were [and are] times where it seems impossible to get everything accomplished in one day, but I am a strong believer in making time for things that are important to you. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

BA: Where did your passion for healthy eating and fitness originate?

Kylie: My passion for healthy eating and fitness definitely developed in my high school years. I read a book on nutrition just for fun and was instantly intrigued about how much food and exercise effects our bodies, minds, and moods. I decided to test out how different I would feel if I started eating healthy and exercising daily and the changes were drastic. I instantly had more energy, my skin was wayyy clearer, my hair and nails began to grow like crazy and I was so much happier. I honestly can’t describe how much more amazing you feel when you’re treating your body right.

[Kylie’s Vegan Grilled Cheese – NEED THIS NOW]

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to stay in shape?

Kylie: Instead of focusing on the negatives I always think about the positives. I encourage myself to work out by thinking about how much better i’ll feel after or how much energy i’ll have the next day. The way you talk to yourself is so important and you should always talk to yourself like you would to someone you love, it is honestly the strongest motivator!

BA: What is your favorite go-to healthy food?

Kylie: Avocados. I LOVE avocados. I eat at least one a day, completely plain with an occasional dash of sea salt. Besides the fact that they taste great, they are also AMAZING for you!

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

Kylie: I guess my #1 tip would be to always make time to do the things you love, because to me a healthy lifestyle is a lifestyle full of happiness… not just fruits, vegetables and a daily run.

[The total package – dirt biker, surfer, amazing cook, giant heart of gold]

BA: What does a day in the life of Kylie entail?

Kylie: Ahhh this is such a hard one because each of my days are so different from the next, but almost all of them start with some kind of breakfast smoothie and granola. Then it’s time for work! Sometimes I’ll work out during my lunch break, or once I am home I’ll go to the gym or workout outside. I LOVE hiking, biking and running around my neighborhood because there are tons of trails and mountains [Usually my Fiance joins me if he’s off work in time!]. Then we have dinner, maybe watch a movie, play cards, or just talk until were tired. Lately I have been meditating before bed and I am obsessed with how relaxed I feel [anddd how much better I sleep]!!

BA: You just got engaged, congrats! How did you meet your fiance meet? Any tips for keeping your relationship fun and exciting?

Kylie: I met my fiance during my best friends birthday trip to Mexico, her parents and his were mutual friends so he volunteered to show us around for the weekend. We ended up having tons in common, stayed in touch and began dating a few months later. We’ve now been dating over two years and he just proposed in the most romantic way possible.

My best tip for keeping a relationship fun and exciting is to go out and do things together! Don’t get stuck in the same routine. Make sure you continue to try new things together, go to new places, grow and learn together.

[How cute are they?!]

BA: Have you started wedding planning yet? Any tips for girls planning their own wedding?

Kylie: I have started planning! We actually just picked our date and location and I couldn’t be more excited! Planning a wedding is SO much fun, but can easily get overwhelming. My best tip would be to create a list of all the things you need to find and do by your wedding day and the date they have to be done by. I can’t tell you how much this list has helped me, I know what I’ve already done and what I need to do next. It definitely makes things less stressful.

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Kylie: Focus on what you love about yourself and pay no attention to the negatives. And again, make sure that you are doing whats best for you and everything else will fall into place. I’m not saying to be greedy and ONLY think of yourself, but definitely make time for your own happiness. So, if that means letting the laundry sit there an extra day so that you can squeeze in a quick workout then that’s what you should do. When you make time for the things you love, and you take pride in yourself and your happiness, your confidence will shine and reflect on others.

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Kylie: Lately it has been meditation. I just started meditating but I am completely in love with it and it has made me so much more relaxed. If you’ve never mediated before there are awesome videos on youtube that will take you through a guided meditation!

BA: And how about your favorite way to pump yourself up?

Kylie: Music. Definitely music. There are some songs that I can’t help but to sing along with or dance to. They immediately lift my spirits and energy!

[HEALTHY, RAW COOKIE DOUGH! You must check our her blog!]

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

Kylie: Oh this is SO hard.

I feel like I can relate to so many songs, but my absolute favorite is Annie Bosko’s “Crooked Halo”. The first time I heard it I listened to every single word. I love it. I love how Annie shows women that you don’t have to be one thing. You can be sweet and stubborn, girly, yet a total tom boy, or a homebody with a gypsy soul. The important thing is to be yourself and to know who you are.

BA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Kylie:  I’m pretty sure I read this in one of my high school planners, but I wrote it down and have kept it forever.

“If we remembered everyday that we could lose someone at any moment, we would love them more fiercely and freely, and without fear – not because there is nothing to lose but because everything can always be lost.”

I am in love with this quote. It reminds me that there is nothing more important in life than love and whom we share it with. It’s so easy to get caught up in the glitter and glam that money offers, but no amount of money can replace the memories, laughs and love we share with others.

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Kylie: Face sunscreen. I am OBSESSED. I absolutely love the sun and I’m pretty sure 95% of my days are spent at the beach. I’ve always known that the sun wasn’t great for your skin but lately some of my relatives have been showing signs of skin cancer so I have become super careful about how much sun exposure my skin gets. Especially my face and neck! Plus sunscreen helps prevent premature aging, wrinkles and sun spots!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Kylie: To me empowering women is supporting them in their hopes, dreams and desires. Women are so hard on each other, when in reality it should be the opposite. Women understand women best, so why not use that understanding to inspire and encourage each other. Whether it be through kind words, support, opportunities, or a simple smile , when we stand behind each other amazing things are accomplished.

[Some of Kylie’s AMAZING healthy recipes]

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Kylie: Ditch the jealousy, don’t judge and simply be nice to each other. The world will be a much better place because of it, I promise.

BA: What’s next for you?

Kylie: Right now I am in the process of moving to Mexico! And I am so excited to explore the land and culture so I am sure my blog will reflect that! But that’s just the start of whats coming next, there are SO many things I want to do and have already started doing we’ll just have to wait and see what I finish first! :)

Good luck to you, Kylie! We are SO excited to see what the future brings for such a kind, beautiful soul like yourself! xx

Be sure to follow Kylie on her journey:)

Bowed Arrow Babe: Fallon Baker

We’ve had the pleasure of knowing Fallon for a few years now. She is one of the happiest people we’ve ever come across and definitely the sweetest! She never has a bad thing to say about people and will befriend anyone. Her faith is unbelievably strong and we admire her on her ability to stay strong in a world full of critics. She is just as beautiful inside as she is on the outside! She also recently married that man of her dreams and they make the most gorgeous couple! We could go on and on about this beauty but we’d better let you get to know her for yourself!

Hey Gorgeous! Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to share a few insider things with us and the rest of the Bowed Arrow Babes out there!

Let’s talk about that beautiful life of yours!

::How old were you when you decided that modeling was something you wanted to do?::

I was 14 years old when I started. I had always been interested in modeling and had received comments from friends and family that I should look into it so my mom and I went to several agencies in Colorado where I grew up and the first one I met with signed me and I began modeling right away!

::Where did this passion originate?::

I’ve always loved fashion even when I was a little girl. I would play dress up and put on fashion shows for my parents and dress my little brothers in outfits too, poor guys! I just loved being creative. My dad also would film everything as we were growing up to document our lives and so I think I got used to being in front of a camera from a very young age and always loved it.

::What’s a memorable moment from your journey?::

The most memorable and unique modeling job I had was when I traveled to Hong Kong with the company prAna to model their new swimwear line that they had just made. I was only out there for 2.5 days but I loved every bit of the culture and people and seeing that part of the world.

::What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?::

Probably the biggest hardship that I faced in the modeling world was the issue of your image and trying to be perfect for everyone. When I first started I was 14 and like a sponge, I soaked in everything that every agent, client and other model told me, both positive and negative. Everyone has different opinions in this industry of what is healthy and what’s not, what looks good and what doesn’t and they have no fear of telling you. Before I knew it I was super unhappy with my body and my look simply from taking to heart all the negative comments from others and letting them outweigh all the positive ones. I developed very unhealthy eating patterns and exercise regimes in order to be the perfect model and have the perfect look for everyone. But that was the catch 22; I realized that if you try to be everyone’s version of perfect you are going to lose yourself in the mess and never be happy or good enough. Psalm 139:14 says “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse means the world to me and turned my perspective around. We are all wonderfully made by God and what He creates is perfection, there are no mistakes. I now measure myself up to God’s standards and not the world’s standards because I know God made me perfectly. Today I’ve never been happier and surprisingly never worked more simply from keeping my focus in the right place and not yielding to what everyone wants or what every person thinks is perfect.

::You just got married! Congrats! You and Dusty make the most beautiful couple! How did you both meet?::

Aww well thank you so much! I absolutely adore him! Dusty and I met through one of my girlfriends that I modeled with. She had just met him in passing and knew his sister briefly so the fact that she thought of him and I as being a good match was a work of the Lord, seriously! She started to tell me about him on a job one day and how she thought we would be great together and that I should come up and meet him. I was living in Newport Beach at the time and he was in Santa Barbara (where my girlfriend was from too). So the following weekend I came up to Santa Barbara and we all went to their friend’s birthday party, which turned out to be a cowboys and indians themed party. I dressed as an indian and he was a cowboy. As soon as I met him I remember this surreal feeling coming over me that he was going to be the man I married. We talked the rest of that night and hung out the whole next day and sure enough a year later he asked me to marry him. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me:)

::Any advice to keep your relationship fun and exciting?::

Now that Dusty and I are married we are super busy with everyday life and don’t always get as much time together each day as we would like. Quality time together is so important to us so we always make sure to schedule a date night once a week. Just because you are married doesn’t mean you stop dating! We enjoy working out together too and putting each other through circuits we make up. We also catch up on each others days once we are in bed and will talk for a bit, read our bible together and finish up by praying with each other every night. We love this time together because no matter what our day was like it unifies us and keeps us on the same page.

::We’ve always been so amazed at your faith and how you carry it through your everyday life. You’re a true inspiration. Have you ever encountered any push-back for this? If so, how did you handle it?::

Well thank you very much, that means a lot! I definitely have encountered push-back at times for my faith, especially in the modeling world. I don’t shoot any lingerie and am very careful with which bikini companies I work with due to the fact that everything is getting more and more risqué nowadays. I feel that your body is a temple for the Lord and that He lives in you guiding you and leading you everyday and the way we treat our bodies and portray ourselves says a lot about us. I feel that lingerie should be for my husband’s eyes only and I have encountered a lot of resistance for that with certain agencies and clients because of the fact that I have a body that works great for lingerie and swim. I’ve learned to stand up for what I believe in no matter how much resistance I get for it or how much money I lose because in the end my relationship with the Lord is the most important thing to me! I’d rather be an example for young women whether they are believers or not and the best way to do that is to make a stand and not succumb under pressure so you can be the example they look up to. You may be the only walking Bible that some people see/read; I always want to make sure I am the proper representation for others of that and not leading them astray:)

::What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?::

Confidence is loving yourself and who God made you to be and walking in that with a smile on your face, grace in your heart and truth on your lips. I achieve confidence by putting God first and not taking life or other people too seriously.

::Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?::

Yes we all know that life can get tremendously busy! But that doesn’t mean you can’t keep in shape and stay healthy at the same time. Whenever I’m on the go, traveling for jobs or running between castings, I try to find creative ways to get my heart rate up a bit. For example I’ll park my car and get out and do jumping jacks for 5-10 minutes in an abandoned lot or nearby park. I’ll do exercises in my hotel room and use any props that  are nearby (be creative). When I have days with a little more time I’ll go for a run along the bike path by the beach where I live or take a kickboxing class or go for a quick hike in the hills. I really like variety. Exercising for 10-20 minutes is better than not at all on a busy day so any time I can get my heart rate up I do it!

::Favorite go-to healthy food?::

Acai Bowls with raw almonds on top.

Oh my gosh, we loveeee acai bowls! Great choice!!

::What’s your favorite way to relax?::

Go for a beach walk with my husband and then come back home and take a hot bath with candles lit. The ocean is one of my favorite places ever and who doesn’t like hot baths?!

Hot baths and red wine are one of our favorites!

::And how about pumping yourself up?::

I always read my devotionals in the morning to align my focus and set my mind straight for the day. My favorite one is called Jesus Calling.

We love the daily devotionals. Chantelly still has the book you gave her when she moved back from Nebraska! It’s such a great way to start your day!

::If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?::

Love Like Crazy by Lee Brice, specifically the verse “Never let your praying knees get lazy, and love like crazy.”

::Something you are totally obsessed with right now?::

Beaded and sequined clothing! No matter where I go if I see clothes with a touch of glitz or sparkle I have to stop in and shop.

You do have the greatest clothes! Love your style, girl!

::What does empowering women mean to you?::

It means giving women the motivation, drive, determination and opportunity to be their best selves and to encourage others to do the same. Women who love themselves and strive to make the world better are the most beautiful!

::If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?::

To love yourself fully and who God has made you to be and to use the gifts He has given you to make this world better! Jeremiah 29:11 😉

That’s SO perfect!

You’re such an inspiration, Fal! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule! We are so glad to have had the opportunity to feature you here.

::If our followers want to follow along on your journey, do you have a website or social media account we can give them?::

Bowed Arrow Babe: Kelly Arthur

Welcome back, Babes! Today we are introducing you to the wonderful artist and friend that assisted in our photo shoot and helped design our logo! She is an amazing artist and one of the most adorable people we have ever met. From greeting cards to amazing paintings, this woman is rocking it and we can’t wait to see where her talent takes her. Here she is, our Bowed Arrow Babe of the week:

Kelly Arthur

BA: So, let’s jump in and talk about your art work. You are obviously creating our logo and we are super excited about that. When did your passion for art begin?

Kelly Arthur: Super young. I’ve made cards for my family since I can remember. I think first grade is the first time I thought “Ya, this is what I love to do”. We had an assignment to set up a “business” and mine was drawing Disney characters and selling them. I wanted to work for disney. That didn’t pan out… yet. Ha! And I’ve been doodling on everything ever since. I was caught a few times by teachers doing drawings of them in class, even in college.

BA: That’s awesome. So, it’s definitely not something new for you! You started a greeting card business recently, tell us more about that!

Kelly Arthur: I’ve been making custom greeting cards for people, mostly by word of mouth through family and friends as well as selling christmas cards and gift tags at different outlets as a side deal for years. Finally I decided to start an Etsy store. It’s in it’s early stages but I’m excited about it. I’ve had my website on the back burner for years so I’m hoping to get it synced with my Etsy shop here soon. I do everything from cards to huge acrylic paintings. I’ve had an art show and I have some paintings up at a wine bar in Long Beach and a couple other showings.

BA: Sounds like a lot of fun! Hopefully, we will be seeing your work with Disney soon:)
Which wine bar?

Kelly Arthur: That would be awesome! The District. It’s owned by the neatest couple who feature local artists.

BA: That’s great! You’ll have to send us some pictures so everyone can see your work!
How do you stay motivated and keep your creative juices flowing?

Kelly Arthur: I do have a Facebook page for it: Kelly Kathleen Art
I’m lucky to have creative friends, like our mutual friend Marissa. Having people around you who support you and have similar aspirations is huge. Even searching the internet and finding random things to draw or paint. I can walk around card stores like Paper Source and get ideas. I’m like a kid in a candy store. I have a sketchbook that I doodle in constantly.

BA: We totally agree! We can all help keep each other motivated now!

Kelly Arthur: I have some friends that will send me drawings or cards and say “you could so do this in a more creative way….do it” Ha!

BA: That’s rad! Encouraging friends are the best friends! And it’s nice to have someone to go to for new logo help too!

Kelly Arthur: Amen sister!

BA: Where do you hope to be in 5 years? 10 years?

Kelly Arthur: Gracious, that question. 5 years, I’d love to make a name for Kelly Kathleen ART or even some sort of collaboration, whether it be with a fellow artist or working for a company like Papyrus. I want to make art my sole income and maybe have a couple more art shows under my belt. 10 years? I would love to own an actual shop. A boutique, where local artists can sell and I can have my art up as well…That has coffee and champs. A spot people can come and be creative together. Those are my art aspirations anyway.

BA: Champs! You’re speaking our language!
We wiil hang out in your shop and drink champagne and admire art any day!

Kelly Arthur: Right? How fun does that sound? Marissa Aguilar and I have talked a lot about it.

BA: You two would have the cutest shop!

Kelly Arthur: I think so. She’s been making jewelry and screen prints. I think it would be so fun to work together!

BA: Totally! What does a perfect day look like to you?

Kelly Arthur: Oh man, I’m pretty easy. Brunch, beach cruisers and dog beach.

BA: Sounds perfect! Especially since brunch means champagne!

Kelly Arthur: I figured that went without saying! It isn’t brunch without champagne!

BA: Yep! Any advice for others who are interested in starting their own business?

Kelly Arthur: The more I talk to people who have started companies and those, like me, who are just starting out, tenacity is so important. We’ve all heard actors say “you just have to be ok with hearing ‘you’re not good enough’ and ‘no’ …starting a business can be very similar. Even if it’s you, yourself, being the doubter. I’ve been my own worst enemy. My advice is everyday keep at it. Make a list. Check those boxes off everyday. Even if it’s only one. My mom has suggested to me: “Accomplish something toward your goal everyday. Even if it’s something small.” I’m still working on taking that advice!

Marissa Aguilar, Kelly Arthur and your Bowed Arrows founders relaxing after a long day of work!

BA: And great advice it is! It’s hard to stay motivated when you get sidetracked or feel like you have doubters, but you just gonna keep on swimming. We know you loved art from an early age, but was there anything else you wanted to be when you grew up?

Kelly Arthur: And I’m easily sidetracked, so I need to take my own advice! When I was young and people asked me what I wanted to be when I grown up this was literally my answer “I want to either work for Disney, own a football team or be a race car driver.” My driving record shows that I’ve put a valiant effort into the racing career with no success, just a poor driving record. As far as owning a football team? Yeah, I’m a few dollars short and I know nothing about football. Except that I’m a fan of the activities involved while watching football: Drinking and eating and socializing. Ha! So art was my best bet.

BA: Some of our favorite things too! What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?

Kelly Arthur: Confidence, to me, means being at peace with what God has blessed you with. Own it. Find joy in it. To surround yourself with people who remind you that you have a purpose, because doubting yourself is really exhausting. Believing doubts others may have in you is a waste of time. Confidence is liberating. Not gonna lie, everyday I struggle with confidence. I read those Pinterest quotes “She believed she could, so she did” and sometimes want to vomit, but there is some truth to them.

BA: Totally! Sometimes those quotes are a great reminder. We couldn’t agree more! Fake it until you become it!

Kelly Arthur: Word!

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

Kelly Arthur: Take the stairs! I just got a fitbit. We’ll see how that pans out. My grandmas told me the funniest saying growing up “get your liver jumping everyday.” So have Champagne for breakfast? I kid…kinda. But seriously, to keep moving. Working out all the time is hard, but taking a walk while on the phone instead of just sitting. Taking the stairs. Parking in the farther spot. Sounds like silly advice but it’s actually really good. Oh and drink more water! Less soda and sugary drinks. It’s just more sugar. Plus, your body and skin will thank you in the short term and long run!

BA: Yes, we are all about that! Small things add up over time! What’s your favorite way to relax?

Kelly Arthur: So cliche, but either a bath with a glass of wine or jacuzzi with a glass of wine. I don’t know what it is but it’s like my Xanax. Or sitting in my pjs watching Dateline. You’d think that would stress me out!

BA: (Laughter) Seriously! But at least you will know what to look out for in scary situations!

Kelly Arthur: Exactly! That’s my thought process anyway. Or I know what not to do if I ever become a criminal.

BA: (Laughter) Hopefully that never happens! And how about pumping yourself up?

Kelly Arthur: Good tunes! Seriously, music makes everything better!

BA: If you could describe yourself in a song, what would it be?

Kelly Arthur: A song I made up or an actual song? Or should that be obvious?

BA: Hell, if you’ve written a song about yourself we would love to hear it! But, an actual song will work!

Kelly Arthur: Ha! Well somewhere in between Video by India Arie and Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert. That was a tough question!

BA: Yes!!! We love a good kickass girl power anthem!
Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Kelly Arthur: My friend got me The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s kit to make their Winter’s Dream latte at home. I’ve been making a lot of them. And as always my Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper chapstick. I can’t go anywhere without it.

BA: (Chantel) OMG I love that drink! (Jenna) Chapstick queen over here! I’ll have to try that one!

Kelly Arthur: Get the kit. You can make them with a quarter of the vanilla stuff so they aren’t so bad for you! And you’ll never need another chapstick.

BA: Oh good tip! We will def have to do that! What does empowering women mean to you?

Kelly Arthur: Loving on them! Not being afraid to compliment, even if you don’t know them. That little “You have great hair” to a woman you don’t know in the grocery aisle could go a long way. She could have been feeling poorly about something and that made her day. Compliment away! But don’t lie. Ha.

BA: Love that! Random compliments are the best! Ok, last one girlie!

If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Kelly Arthur: You know, I hate cheesy but my favorite, Audrey Hepburn, said it best “Nothing is impossible. The word itself says ‘I’m possible'”.

BA: (Jenna) Oh, you know how much I love Audrey as well. Not cheesy at all. Quite perfect, actually. Thank you so much, Kelly. We really enjoyed this. Can’t wait to see the logos and collab on more things in the near future!

Kelly Arthur: Heck ya! And Thank you! You girls are so awesome! I had so much fun being apart of your photoshoot day!

Bowed Arrow Babe: Marissa Aguilar

Welcome back to Woman Crush Wednesday! We are so thrilled to introduce y’all to Marissa Aguilar as our Bowed Arrow Babe of the week. Marissa is a dear friend and the amazing photographer behind Bowed Arrows. She is such an inspiration to us because she is constantly finding and following new dreams. She is an amazing photographer and writer whom loves learning caligraphy, jewelry design, art history and travels the world in the process…by herself! She is a great friend, she is fearless, she is talented and so genuine. We hope you enjoy getting to know Marissa as our BAB of the week and check out her blog and Instagram to get to know her a little better. So without further adieu,

Meet Marissa Aguilar

BA:  First things first, Where did your passion for photography originate?

Marissa AguilarI’ve always been a super sentimental person and I never wanted to forget moments that were important to me. The people I love and the expressions they had while talking about things they were passionate about ….or trips that my parents had taken me on. There’s nothing like the first moment you see the Grand Canyon…or the Sistine chapel….or the way your Grandpa laughs.Things like that sparked an interest for me. That was like when I was 16 and my grandma gave me and my sister an old Canon 35mm.

A little BTS of our shoot with Marissa!

BA:You’ve got the travel bug and have definitely been to some pretty amazing places. Any favorites?

Marissa AguilarParis will always be my first getaway choice. I could go there a thousand times and it wouldn’t be enough. Everywhere you look it’s a picture. The Dordogne Valley in France is like walking into a storybook. The cottages, the countryside, the rivers all make you feel like Cinderella is coming around the corner. I have to say Chile is also a favorite. I had some good times there and met some great people. Oh! But there’s nothing like having a kangaroo sneak up on you or swimming in the great Barrie Reef. I’d say those places are my top three.

BA: Wow, you’ve really seen it all! Hopefully, we have the chance to experience all of that as well! Sounds like a movie! We want to travel with you! And you’ve definitely met some cute boys alongs the way, right?

Marissa Aguilar(Laughs) I’m sure you’ll be taking Bowed Arrows on the road sometime in the near future! Anytime, just let me know when and where! And…Ummm yes! Australian models and rugby players. Cute foreign boys are the best!

BA: What does a perfect day look like to you?

Marissa AguilarMy perfect day……my perfect day would be to get up before sunrise, grab my camera and a notebook and just head out on the open road. There’s nothing better than a sunrise drive with a cup of coffee and no destination. Since I live in California I’ve got plenty to see within a few hours.

BA: And you are the queen of solo road trips! Do you ever feel uneasy or unsafe when you travel alone?

Marissa AguilarEvery now and then I get a bit uneasy, whether it’s an overactive imagination or a gut feeling, I usually trust it. I encourage everyone to travel solo but there’s a fine line between adventure and danger. But you can’t go thinking that something bad is right around every corner. Remember when I slept at that truck stop at 2 am? I kept thinking some deranged trucker was going to hurt me. And then I had to use the bathroom after a couple hours and I thought I might end up on a milk carton….but on my way in and on my way out one of them held the door open for me and called me ma’am. I felt like a jerk.

Solo travel selfies!

BA: Love your independence! Where do you hope to be in 5 years? 10 years?

Marissa AguilarThat’s a tough question for me because my motto is the ‘plan is to have no plan’ but as I get older I realize I need some goals. So I would like to have a small creative business established. I’m working on a couple of projects and an apparel line right right now, I would like that to be up running successfully. Within ten years I want the business to be small with with a few key employees so I can hand it off to do my traveling. I figure I’ll be dragging kids and a husband along on my adventures by then too, I hope!

BA: That sounds like the perfect no plan-plan! You are constantly learning something new, from calligraphy to jewelry making. Are those things that you might want to grow into a business as well, or just extra hobbies to add to your list, because you seem to be good at everything you try!

Marissa AguilarIt’s basically my entire life story. I just see where i end up. Well, my business will probably incorporate all of those skills. I’ve learned basic letterpress and silkscreening as well so they all come in to play with what I want to do. I like to keep learning. The more you know, the more you can relate or build on what you already have. I have a scuba diving certification class coming up next month! I’m prepared for anything!

BA: How do you stay motivated and keep your creative juices flowing?

Marissa AguilarSometimes I have to talk myself into being productive because it’s really easy to just say I don’t feel “inspired” but one of the simple things is following artists and creatives on Instagram. I see what everyone else is doing or accomplishing and I research several freelancers and small businesses and it gets me going. I’ll go to the library and pull out tons of photography books to study different styles… Or I’ll take a road trip! That’s where I do a lot of my big thinking.

BA: We do some of our best thinking in the car!

Marissa AguilarRight?! There’s something about just driving and singing along to the radio that sparks creativity.

BA: One of our favorite things! We used to take road trips to Vegas when I (Jenna) was living in California and we would make playlists and sing our hearts out the entire way! Any advice for others who are interested in starting their own business or want to try something new?

Marissa AguilarStop making excuses and don’t doubt yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself then how will anyone else? Everyone is busy but start doing what you can to reach your goal. Little by little if that’s all you can do, but be consistent. Take a class or workshop to learn something new. Oh yeah and if anyone needs a cheerleader, then call me! I love encouraging people to follow their passion.

BA: Great advice! You are a great cheerleader! Anyone would be lucky and blessed to have you as a friend!

Okay, so now to the fun questions!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Marissa Aguilar: I wanted to be a photographer, a ballerina, a wedding & event planner, a fashion stylist, a waitress, and a Mom. I wanted to do it all. And actually I’ve got four of those checked off my list already. Sadly, I don’t have the grace for a ballerina. That’s not in the cards for me. I’m like the dancing hippo in Dumbo.

BA: (Jenna) I didn’t have the grace either…and us “top heavy” girls don’t work well with leotards, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dance to the beat of our own drum!

Do you have a favorite workout or way to stay in shape?

Marissa AguilarActually, I do Pop physique! So I pretend I’m a ballerina. It’s the best and most challenging workout I’ve ever done. They warm up with planks! And they call it “butt school” because it gets your booty in shape like no other!

BA: We love a good booty workout!

What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?

Marissa AguilarConfidence to me, means knowing your value and what you bring to the table. Everyone has different strengths but knowing that you can offer something that someone else can’t because you are an individual. Confidence is believing in yourself. Being knowledgeable about your craft, product, skill, etc is crucial. Also, sometimes you gotta fake it ’til you make it. Just do whatever you’re doing with a big smile, your head up, and lots of enthusiasm. It’s infectious. Oh and for me, if I’m a little uneasy, I make sure my appearance and outfit are spot on. You get a little strut and a boost when you feel good about your appearance. When I look good, I feel powerful.

BA: Perfectly put! Love it! What’s your favorite way to relax?

Marissa AguilarMy favorite way to relax is going to a local spot with my other creative girl friends and having some wine or champagne and talking about life and our plans. To me, that’s refreshing and encouraging. But I like a good facial too!

BA: Who doesn’t! Champagne and facials ery’day!

And how about pumping yourself up?

Marissa Aguilar:  It’s silly, but I like to put on some loud music and dance like I’m one of Beyonce’s back up dancers. It’s impossible to feel sad or blah when you’re dancing. And it burns calories! Bonus!

I should have said I read, like, Ernest Hemingway or something intelligent.

BA: (Jenna) Hemingway is amazing, but definitely doesn’t get my heart rate up! (Chantelly) OMG why do we all not hang out more often?! Champagne and Bey dance parties are our fave! (Jenna) Dance like nobody is watching, especially when nobody is watching.

Marissa Aguilar(Laughter) Seriously! I know! You can’t beat them! When no one is watching it gets bad!

BA: (JennaThat’s when I sing to myself in the mirror in my bath towel!

Marissa AguilarDude, that’s the best! I read that people who talk or sing in front of the mirror are mentally stronger.

BA: (Jenna) Well then, I am Hercules!

Marissa Aguilar: I believe it.

BA: If you could describe yourself in a song, what would it be?

Marissa AguilarAmerican girl. That’s the first one that popped into my head ” she couldn’t help thinking that there was a little more life somewhere else” that’s me. I wish I could be on the road meeting people and hearing their stories .

BA: And who doesn’t love Tom Petty!

Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Marissa AguilarRight?!! That album is the road trip essential.

Brush lettering. It’s been increasingly popular and its a total art. I’m trying to teach myself but I’m not there just yet.

BA: Sounds cool! I’m sure you’ll get it ASAP since you’re so artsy!

Marissa Aguilar: Thanks! I’m trying!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Marissa AguilarYou know that Erica Cook quote? “I’m not interested in competing. I hope we all make it.” There’s healthy competition and the kind that tears down and to me, empowering women is being a source of encouragement, and a cheerleader. It means building each other up and helping to make each other better, stronger, more knowledgeable, more skilled, better equipped. I’m of the mentality that we can all help each other get there. Women are powerful creatures, and even more powerful when we band together.

BA: We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! So true and one of the many reasons you make the perfect Bowed Arrows Babe! One of our main goals with Bowed Arrows is to stop the competing, so that quote and your attitude are just perfect!

Marissa AguilarThanks! I’m so honored and excited to be included in what you two are accomplishing. It’s inspiring to me!

BA: Okay, last question so you can get back to being creative!

If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Marissa AguilarI would tell women everywhere that if there is something that moves you, that inspires you, that makes you feel alive, then to follow that feeling. Everyone has different circumstances but in order to be a strong woman, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandma, you have to take care of yourself and have something that is yours. Skill, talent, hobby, goal, ambition, career, pedicure, road trip, hike, good book, or just “me time”… Pursue it and don’t let other things crowd out that one thing. Be devoted to it. You owe it to yourself and you deserve it.

BA: You are amazing and such an inspiration. We can’t wait to share this with our Bowed Arrow Babes! I’m sure they will all want to know more about you!
