BAB: Kari White of Mayor B!

image

Kari White, we can’t even begin to describe how excited we are to have you featured as our Bowed Arrows Babe of the month! Jenna has known Kari for over 10 years and when we first learned about her project, Mayor B, we just couldn’t get enough.
BA: Mayor B. is essentially insanely creative and adorable pictures of your French Bulldog, so what was the inspiration behind it? Did you always have plans of selling the artwork or did it start as fun?

KW: It started as a fun project, I had a camera and started taking photos of my dog Rambo. I gave them out as presents but then people started to take notice and want them for their homes. The demand grew so I made large prints with custom frames and resin and began to sell them here in Los Angeles. Obviously there was a lot of trial and error, but I learned the craft from my circle of artistic friends.

From there I started Mayor B. Not just as a company, but more an interpretation of my dogs personality. He’s a boss, and I felt like when it came to lifestyle products he deserved so much more than anything I could buy. I started making him custom leather and brass collars, modified vintage pieces, and handmade leather harnesses. People started to take notice and I realized that I wasn’t alone in thinking my dog was more than just a pet.

BA: We totally understand that! We are huge dog lovers here at Bowed Arrows. Tell us more about your charming pup!

KW: I got Rambo as a puppy, he’s my Christmas baby. I was always into photography and when Rambo was a puppy I tried dressing him up just to see what would happen. He would sit there with an air of confidence (that can easily be mistaken for arrogance). He was so human like, he looked good and he knew it…ha! Pet photography can be so campy, and I was hoping to make photos that would put you in a good mood without being silly. I know I’m not the only one who sees a picture of their pet and smiles and I wanted to share that with those around me.

BA: What does a day in the life of Kari White and Mayor B. entail?

KW: I work in an industrial space in downtown owned by my friends at Croft House. They design and build modern furniture here in LA and have been extremely helpful with Mayor B. We have a shared vision of working with skilled craftsmen to make quality goods. Its an inspiring environment because of the industrial aesthetic. There’s something about being near band saws and drill presses that fits so well with Mayor B.

BA: What’s your favorite Mayor B. shot?

KW: My favorite piece is the “Prince of Pop” inspired by Warhol.  For some reason it makes me question my sanity hahahaha!

warhol_1024x1024

BA: What’s next for you and Mayor B?

KW: Everything we have been creating is all for the love of our pets. Now we are working on spreading the message and building a community of like minded friends. We have retail partnerships here in Los Angeles that are fantastic and have been providing us with support and encouragement and plan on expanding east to NYC and Minneapolis in the future. New products like dog bowls, food storage, collars and leashes are around the corner. Overall I love creating Mayor B, it makes me happy and inspired and I love being able to share that with others.

BA: What did you want to be when you grew up?

KW: I always wanted to have my own cooking show like Paula Dean & The Barefoot Contessa…. I used to make my brothers film me making chicken and lasagna and stuff…I called it ”Kooking with Kari”  hahaha!

(We have tried a few of the recipes…delicious!)

BA: What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?

KW: I think confidence obviously comes from owning your strengths, but also being able to recognize your weaknesses and having the guts to try and strengthen them.

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

KW: I’m really into nutrition and good fats…I think making time to eat healthy is key when you’re busy and stressed out. What you put in your body reflects your mood and your energy, and I think its all about staying consistent and as close to the ground as possible, so staying away from a lot of sugar and processed crap.  I also swear by brain foods like avocados and fish oil!

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

KW: Definitely reading…I’m a total sci-fi / fantasy book nerd so its my escape.

BA: And how about pumping yourself up?

KW: I think playing soccer, surfing, and physical activities are when I do most of my thinking. I have a ton of energy so sometimes I need to just go on a hike or kick the ball around with my friends and it really motivates me with work. My biggest inspiration comes when I make time to go antique shopping.

mayorb 3

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

KW: Metal work. I learned how to weld from one of my friends and completely out of control with it. Its like an extreme version of a glue gun hahaha

BA: I’m sure we have some curious readers, so how can they get Mayor B. artwork and clothing?

KW: Everything is up on my site MayorB.com. I also love special projects with my art, so feel free to email me.

BAB: Taryn Rasgon of Vegetaryn

HARDT (116 of 608)

One thing we have started to notice about our Bowed Arrow Babes is how genuine, personable and sweet they all are. Maybe that is one of the big keys as to why they are so successful! Of course they are also driven and fearless!

Taryn is all of the above and such a big inspiration because she started her company with absolutely no experience and has taught herself along the way. It hasn’t even been a full year and she already has over 13k followers on Instagram!

Now, it’s time to meet her!

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

TMy name is Taryn Rasgon, and I am 25 years old. I grew up in Agoura Hills, CA and started my own company, Vegetaryn, in November of 2014.

BA: Tell us how Vegetaryn came to be.

TWhen I was in college my friends were all about being Entrepreneurs. Their work ethic and drive really rubbed off on me. I figured the best way to learn about business, was to go out and try to start one. Even though I have never taken a course in graphic design, SEO,  or marketing, I have figured out how to build a website, brand, and business – mostly, I can thank Google for the answers :)

{Shop her shirt HERE!}

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey?

TI’ll never forget the first time I got a sale, I honestly did not know if I was going to be able to sell a single shirt. It was the best feeling when I got the first notification that someone purchased a Vegetaryn shirt, I couldn’t believe it, it felt like my hard work became worth it!

BA: What does a day in the life of Taryn entail?

TA day in the life of Taryn entails waking up in the morning and starting the day off with either Tea or a Smoothie. Then I answer emails and check my social media. Usually, each day can vary but I often spend my day in coffee shops, my apartment, or vegan eateries working on updates, blog posts, events, shipping & packaging, and maintaining all things Vegetaryn. All while eating delicious plant-based food throughout the day!

BA: The items you sell are adorable! Where did you get your inspo for the fun, creative sayings?!

TIt’s funny because I have tons of sayings and lots of exciting plans for new designs in the future. I usually think of 3 or 4 of the sayings at once. It’s like I get a burst of inspiration and my brain is on fire (usually I am with a friend or two, when we are being clever). I keep a list of all the sayings I ever come up with. I ask my friends and family which ones they like and then start from there. All Vegetaryn shirts & items are meant to be fun and worn as easy conversation starters. What better way to meet a stranger than over a good laugh?!

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

11667039_10207439463211771_1696552527_n

BA: How did you get into fashion?

KR: I have a background in fashion photography. After I returned from shooting fashion photography in Paris, I was eager to continue on a creative path to learn more about design. I think my skills and years of experience in fashion photography really helped sharpen my eye for design. While I was in design school, I continued directing, and shooting my own fashion editorial spreads for fun and for submissions. I also created my own fashion magazine project where I managed the roles as editor, photographer and layout designer. Later on that year, my magazine won the Gold Award for Graphis International New Talent Awards which was exciting! Then, after I graduated from design school I worked at a design studio in London, which is such a major fashion capital. London will always be my favorite fashion city! After working in London I went on to direct and photograph some fashion shoots in Berlin, which had a totally different fashion aesthetic than London. I think every city I’ve been to has inspired my style sense in different ways. I’m back in Los Angeles now, and I find this city to be just as inspiring as the others. LA has so many cool new and old things to discover, it’s really inspired my brand. To me, LA is like wearing an old dress that you’ve worn 100 times, but you just discovered this old dress has cool little pockets that you never knew were there before.

BA: What were you doing before you started your own company?

KR: After I graduated from Design school I ditched everything I owned (including my car), I left my family + friends behind in California in order to live out my dream of living + working in London. I had always wanted to live in London. It’s such a creative, fashion forward, BRILLIANT city, that it has always captivated me in ways nowhere else could. I wanted to feel a part of something bigger. I wanted to be in a place where I could be constantly inspired with every turn of my head. I absolutely LOVED London, and everyday was like living the dream. I was so inspired daily, just like I had always hoped. But, after some time, it didn’t work out in London for me because of complicated UK visa restrictions, so I came back to the States. I felt so lost + ashamed that my dream didn’t work out for the long term. I would constantly beat myself up, and I had many identity crisis freak outs. It was a huge process to rebuild & reinvent myself again. Then one day I realized, this IS my reality so I better learn to like it, or even love it.

BA: When did you get the idea for Miss With-It?

KR: I was sick in bed one day + I wanted to feel somewhat productive, so I just started coming up with funny sayings and designing them on pillows to entertain myself and give myself a little chuckle, haha. I shared them on social media for my friends to see, and everything really just picked up from there. From the positive response I received, I continued designing more, and through this Miss With-it was born. While I was in the midst of my depression, I focused all of my energy on starting up this new business. It brought me so much joy when my audience thought my designs were funny and shared them with their friends. I love making people laugh, and I absolutely love it when my customers tag me in a photo on social media of how they are enjoying their new goodies. Without them even realizing it, the support of my engaged customers all over the globe managed to pull me out of my daily pity parties haha. I couldn’t be more grateful to everyone for their support of Miss With-it.

11692902_10207439458491653_1075219615_n

BA: Have you always been into fashion and home decor or was it a twist of fate?

KR: Yes, very much so. I’m an inspired person. I am the product of my environment(s).

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and Miss With-It.

KR: Well, I’ve always been a multi-passionate, super-creative, with massive amounts of incurable ADD. There are so many things that make my heart sing! Design, photography, fashion, travel, color, beautiful typography, laughing… I’d love to just spend the rest of my life laughing haha. Being a lover of so many beauties, I can’t imagine giving any of them up to stick to just ONE thing, and be great at that ONE thing. You know what I mean? With Miss With-it my intention is to combine all of my loves into one vivacious environment in order to spread a little sass, humor + individuality. Miss With-it is about creating a community of With-it Babes that also have a love for multiple interests, the beautiful things in life, and also witty personalities to boot!

BA: So what’s next for you?

KR: Just recently Miss With-it got a completely new makeover! I had so much fun designing the new line, and I’m really excited to bring in the new pouches! These are great for make-up, change, credit cards, and cute emergency items like bobbi pins and additional flair. They’re cute & handy. What could be better? I like to surprise people and keep popping up with new items and designs. So stay tuned for what’s next!

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey to becoming a business owner?

KR: The moment a major idea strikes is the most electric and energizing feeling. I’m a passionate person that thrives on new ideas. I hope to continuously carry these electric moments with me throughout my journey.

BA: What were some of the biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

KR: Oh, definitely overcoming the blues I felt when I came back to the States. My dreams felt like they had shattered into a million pieces. It was a huge lesson in resilience for me. I learned to just get back up, dust myself off, and reinvent myself again. I learned that all of life is a process and to trust that all the dots will connect some day, but you can’t see the dots looking forward, you can only see the dots connect when looking back. Living abroad definitely happened for a reason; I’m a lot tougher than I ever used to be. I pay no mind to any pettiness. The biggest lesson to take away from any disadvantage in life is that failure is a much more faithful teacher than immediate success. Trust me on that.

11647261_10207439458691658_2027939199_n

BA: Best tips for boosting self-confidence?

KR:

1. Never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Comparison is the thief of joy.

2. Watch your thoughts carefully. Train your brain to be positive.

3. Surround yourself with loving, supportive people. Strive to enhance + inspire other people’s lives too.

BA: Any advice for young girls?

KR: Absolutely. Your choices matter; even the seemingly small ones. So, live consciously. Create a vision for your life. What you think about you bring about. Dream build. Read books. Find someone that has a life that you want and figure out how they got it. Pick your role models wisely; find out what they did and do it.

BA: How do you motivate yourself or pump yourself up when you are feeling a little “bleh”?

KR: I’ve always loved punk rock, it really gets me going! So, when I’m feeling “bleh” or low energy, I’ll throw on some Bad Brains, Cramps, The Saints or Dead Kennedys, and just go nuts. Haha, it’s an instant cool fix.

BA: What’s your favorite way to wind-down and relax?

KR: I’m a pretty relaxed and mellow person generally. But, I like to light my Voluspa candle in French Cade Lavender + drink some wine while watching New Girl (it’s the only show I watch). Oh, the simple things.

11713612_10207461964814297_1298889087_n

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

KR: Nancy Sinatra “These boots are made for walkin’ “. My go-to song for Karaoke!

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

KR: I just moved to LA, so I’m obsessed with exploring new areas and finding new pockets that I never knew existed. I love taking walks around my neighborhood in West Hollywood, and people watching!

BA: Any health tips for busy women?

KR: Get at least 7 hours of sleep. Limit your sugar intake. Stay away from processed foods + fast food. Drink green tea everyday. Take probiotics for a healthy gut. Start your day with a protein packed smoothie, throw in a spoonful of coconut oil + apple cider vinegar for energy + to boost your metabolism. If you’re stressed, get outside and go for a walk, you’ll feel much better.

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

KR: Instead of trying to compete with one another, I’d like to see us all succeed. It all starts with having a vision for your own life, and that can have an impact on the world.

BA: Best piece of advice you have ever received?

KR:

“Instead of striving for perfection, strive for excellence; it’s way more fun.” – Mama

“Always set your own standards, or someone else will, and they will set them low.” – Papa

So what exactly is a Bowed Arrow Babe?

BAB

We interrupt our normal programming to address something that we have been getting a lot of questions about…

What’s a Bowed Arrow Babe, or as we affectionally call it, a BAB?

Let’s rewind a little and explain why we started Bowed Arrows. Last year Jenna and Chantelly were talking about how they didn’t feel there was anywhere to go after high school to talk to anyone about normal life issues. There is no guidance counselor or Home Ec teacher to help you or tell you how to do things. Not everybody wants a therapist and not everyone was born with a predisposition to be a regular Martha Stewart.

Arrow_1_5

Jenna began writing a blog called Twenty Something and Lovelis that was an honest look into life in your twenties and how it’s not always all it’s cracked up to be. College isn’t for everyone. Jobs are hard to find. Love is even harder to find (or at least REAL love). Sometimes friendships end. Sometimes you end up completely changing paths because you have been chasing the wrong dream. Shit happens and it can make life, especially young adult life, hard to navigate.

So after a few years of expressing her deepest fears and discoveries to the world, Jenna decided she wanted a place for women of all ages to come and feel accepted and encouraged. When Chantelly heard the idea, she was immediately on board and Bowed Arrows was born.

About the name…

Life takes you through a lot of loops and turns. Your path is rarely straight. You may aim your arrow one place and have it end up in a completely different place, but that is okay. Life is all about the journey and your arrow does not have to point straight in order to get yourself where you need to be. Trust in life. Trust in God. Trust in yourself.

So, what’s a Bowed Arrow Babe?

FullSizeRender (9)
A few of our favorite BABs that helped us launch the blog!

A BAB is a woman who is owning her life. Someone who is comfortable in her own skin, confident, genuine, NICE (HUGE emphasis on nice, caring, compassionate, etc. etc. etc.). BABs lift each other up, encourage one another and want good things to happen to other people. Our babes are not “mean girls” and we are fighting to end girl-on-girl crime. We need to support & love one another and ourselves.

Bowed Arrow Babes want to make a difference. They let their light shine wherever they go. They follow their dreams. They make things happen for themselves. They start a business. They see the world. They make art. They cure cancer. They change the world, one beautiful soul at a time.

Are you a Bowed Arrow Babe? Do you surround yourself with other Bowed Arrow Babes? Tell us more! Leave comments and let us know how you are letting your inner-BAB shine!

We love you, Babes!

Let your best self shine.

xx

Bowed Arrow Babe: Stephanie Thome

StephThome

We’ve had the pleasure of knowing this beauty for quite sometime now and we couldn’t be more excited to feature her on the blog! We love to see our girls take a risk and go for their passion. You only get one life here so make it a happy one. Steph has def chosen her happiest path and is doing extremely well. She is very talented at what she does and her success has only proven that. She is in the process of filing for an offish business license and will soon be an offish #bosslady! Time to meet this babe!

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Stephanie: I love skin care, hair, wine, my husband, tea, coffee, yoga, getting crafty, traveling, sunshine, dirt roads, and anything health inspired! I have a passion for making people feel beautiful and look beautiful and I’m lucky enough to do it on a daily basis.

BA: You got married last year and moved back to your hometown to start your own little business – were you nervous at all?

Stephanie: Nervous would be an understatement. I could not have done it without the encouragement of my husband and trusting in God. It was a leap of faith, but I am grateful everyday that I did it!

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and your business.

Stephanie: Each day I strive to really make a difference in my client’s day and vision towards themselves. I love making people feel good and love themselves inside and out.

StephThome2

BA: Where did your passion for cosmetology and esthetics originate?

Stephanie: I am not quite sure exactly when, I know that I have always had a love for it. I have numerous pictures of me growing up and “styling” my little sisters hair.

BA: What are some of your favorite go-to products?

Stephanie: Vitamin C for sure!! I am also obsessed with Glo Minerals, and love their sheer tint illuminator!

BA: Your skin always looks bangin’! Any skin tips you have to share with us?

Stephanie: Thank you! I tell everyone that it is never too early to start an anti-aging skin care regimen once you are in your 20s! 90% of aging is caused by sun damage, which is pretty scary! I swear by Glo Therapeutics products and use a Vitamin C daily, and a Retinol in the evening along with my cleanser, moisturizer, and an under-eye cream. I also try to get a Glycolic Chemical Exfoliation done monthly.

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to work hard towards your dreams?

Stephanie: My clients really motivate me, when I see what a difference I can do for someone it gives me drive to accomplish anything! I also try to not take on too much at once and conquer one goal at a time before I move on to my next goal.

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey thus far?

Stephanie: It’s a really an amazing feeling looking back at the past 9 months and seeing how far that I have come.  I am going through the process of getting my LLC and official business name of Fringe and Skin, so I would say that is at the top of the list! I am also in the process of building a salon in my home so I am pretty pumped about doing the interior design for that! (I love getting crafty) My best friend Danielle Koch and I also started making hand made goods to retail including blushing petal sugar scrub, essential oil soy candles, sleepy time body butter and much, much more! Oh, and I am helping Dr. Amy Flanagan teach hot yoga at our local fitness center. You could say I have quite a bit going on in my life right about now!! =)

StephThome4

StephThome5

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Stephanie: The hardest part has been putting full trust in God that it is all going to work out. When I start to get down and worried about my books not filling up I say a prayer and put my trust in the Lord and soon enough my phone starts ringing off the hook. : )

BA: What does a day in the life of Steph entail?

Stephanie: It’s quite exciting because it’s always a little bit different but it always must start with hot green tea or coffee as I get ready for the day with my cat, Dar watching me lounging in my husbands sink and Good Morning America on in the background. (Is anyone else obsessed with GMA?!) From there, I head to work which doesn’t really feel like “work” because it consists of doing my favorite things including facials, chemical exfoliation, spray tanning, hair coloring, and haircutting! Once I wrap up my workday I wind down with yoga class three times a week and on my off evening’s I try to get in some cardio and strength training. From there, I head back home and I make supper for my hubby and I and enjoy the rest of our evening together! The weeks go by WAY too fast!

StephThome8

BA: Like we mentioned above, you just got married to the man of your dreams last year!! What’s your favorite thing about being married Any relationship advice for other girls not quite there yet?

Stephanie:  My favorite part of being married is being able to share so many moments and “first time” memories together. It has also been an amazing experience having our first home together and making it ours! It’s a pretty good feeling being able to go to sleep next to the person of your dreams every night.

Advice…I would say never stop dating, there is always something more to learn about your spouse and it keeps it exciting and fun! Always focus on the positive things in your relationship and your spouses good qualities. It’s easy to get wrapped up in negative thoughts and let them overcome the positive. Also, TRUST you cannot have a successful relationship without it.

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Stephanie: Love yourself, and never stop doing the things that you love and that make you happy! Find a time to connect with yourself on a daily basis.

StephThome7

StephThome6

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Stephanie: My happy place is when it is nice outside I love to wind down my evenings by sitting outside on our back deck and enjoying the peacefulness with a glass of wine and a good book. I also find inner peace after an intense hot yoga session.

BA: And how about your favorite way to pump yourself up?

Stephanie: Keeping my goals in close sight!  I also love good music!

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

Stephanie: Anywhere With You by Jake Owen – It was our first dance at our wedding and I feel like it describes Corey and I perfectly. No matter where I am in life as long as I have Corey by my side I am happy.

StephThome3

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Stephanie:  Essential Oils, Healing Stones, + Yoga (always)!! I LOVE educating myself with natural remedies and anything to make me a healthier + happier person.

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Stephanie:  Spreading love, joy, and light upon everyone that you meet. Everyone has their own story so never judge, you have no idea what they have been through.

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Stephanie:  Love yourself, you are amazing.

BA: What’s next for you?

Stephanie: Right now my biggest focus is on opening up my home salon and continuing to educate myself and make my services the best that they possibly can be.

Make sure you follow this lovely babe!!

Bowed Arrow Babe: Emily Biedrzycki

a4

We are SOO very excited for you all to meet this Bowed Arrow Babe! She is the winner from our contest last month and she truly is deserving of the Bowed Arrow Babe title. She’s been through some things in her life and instead of being down on herself and letting them control her, she was strong and fought through them and is now helping other women! Time to meet this sweetheart!

BA: Introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Emily: I’m Emily, and I’m a personal trainer, wife and mother, and I live in Maine. My husband’s name is Andy, and we have a daughter named Coraline, who just turned 5 months!

BA: How do you juggle being a wifey, mommy, personal trainer and counselor?

Emily: Its not easy, but it’s so rewarding. I owe a lot of my success in managing the balancing act to my husband. He’s a wonderful dad, and has been my cheerleader from day one. He pushes me to reach my full potential. Our families have also been integral to me being as successful as I have in reaching my goals. We are so lucky to live close to our families. I also do what I love, so it’s easy to make time for my projects.

a7

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Emily: I have had some big struggles in my life; an eating disorder that developed in high school, depression, and family illness. I couldn’t possibly have gotten through any of these situations without my wonderful friends and family to support me. I learned through therapy that surrounding yourself with supportive people is imperative to getting through challenging life situations.

I have had a hard time leaving my comfort zone, even when it’s not doing me any good.  Two years ago I left a job I hated to become a personal trainer. I let go of some long-term friendships that were no longer healthy. I took some time to really figure out my life’s path, and I am so proud to say that I think I have found it! Taking the leap to change my life was very scary, but I knew I was making the right move.

BA: How do you manage working out and staying healthy with such a busy life?

Emily: Before I gave birth my husband and I worked out with each other, and I’m lucky enough to work in a gym with co-workers who do not accept any excuses! Now that I have Coraline, I have to plan a little more, but I think that helps me stay on track. I take advantage of naptime, and I also squeeze in mini-workouts throughout the day. I like to plank while Coraline has tummy time, and I do squats and deadlifts with her as my weight. She thinks it’s funny to watch me workout.

The nutrition piece of staying healthy has been a little more challenging! When I was pregnant, I gave myself the go-ahead to eat whatever I wanted. Now that I’m breastfeeding, I can’t cut calories, so I make every calorie count with healthy fats, and lots of protein. I also don’t deprive myself. My husband and I sometimes share a few cookies at the end of the night while we catch up with each other after Coraline is asleep.

BA: You mentioned you’ve suffered from an eating disorder in the past – how did you find the courage to get help and make yourself healthy again?

Emily: I struggled with my eating disorder for 7 years before I asked for help. When I finally decided to get help I was at my lowest point. I will never forget the moment I decided to be honest with my family and ask for help. I began having suicidal thoughts while taking anti-depressants and told my husband, who was my boyfriend at the time. He asked me to get help, and my younger sister drove me to the emergency room. Sitting in the hospital, waiting for a crisis counselor to arrive, I looked over at my sister. I asked myself what she must be feeling, looking at her big sister wasting away, talking about killing herself. I realized I wasn’t just hurting myself. I wanted to be someone she could look up to, someone she could come to for advice, or to ask for help. I went through therapy and have been in recovery now for 9 years. I had a wonderful counselor, and the support from my family, my husband, and my friends.

Eating disorder recovery has been important to me ever since. I hope I can inspire anyone suffering to ask for help if they’re ready. It is possible to recover, and to stop suffering.

BA: Any advice to girls struggling with an eating disorder?

Emily: If you’re ready for help, ask for it. There are some amazing organizations that exist solely to help you. The National Eating Disorder Association (www.nationaleatingdisorders.org) and Eating Disorders Anonymous (www.eatingdisordersanonymous.org) are two I recommend. What kept me from getting help sooner was this misconception that I would never be free of the intrusive thoughts that I had. I thought I would always default to being anxious about what I was eating. It wasn’t true, and I wish someone had told me. I live my life like a “normal” person. I don’t think about food the way I used to, and it is liberating.

a2

BA: What do you like to do for fun? What keeps you happy and motivated?

Emily: I love to play video games! Animal Crossing has been keeping me entertained lately, as well as The Sims 4. My mom thinks it’s funny that I play a game that so closely resembles real life. I also moderate a small personal training forum of about 600 trainers, and am working on a fitness blog called Body After (www.bodyafter.com) that focuses on getting your body back (after baby, after injury, in recovery) and finding ways to fit fitness into our busy lives.

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

Emily: Hmm, this one is tough! I think Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen.

BA: We all try to eat healthy but we are big on everything in moderation. Any guilty pleasures you love to indulge in every once in awhile?

Emily: Moderation is my motto, as well! My indulgences are anything chocolate. I’ve been loving these dark chocolate himalayan sea salted almonds lately. Just the right amount of decadent and healthy!

a3

BA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Emily: Dreams don’t work unless you do. My mom is always telling me to put my wants and needs out into the universe, and what she means is you can’t just daydream about a better life, or a better you. You have to make that intention clear, and work for it. No one is going to work harder to reach your goals than you are.

BA: Do you have a strong woman in your life that you look up to?

Emily: I don’t know if I can pick only one! My mom has given me the confidence to be myself, and know that I will attract into my life what I put out into the world. She was the driving force behind me becoming a personal trainer, and is an amazing example of remaining strong when you feel weakest. I think my mother-in-law did an amazing job raising her kids; she loves all of her boys, daughters-in-law, and granddaughters like nobody else exists in the whole wide world, and I aspire to that with my daughter. My sisters-in-law are both amazing women who started their own businesses, and successfully manage to balance their roles as business-owners, wives, and mothers.

a6

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Emily: Talk to yourself the way you talk to your friends. When your friends are feeling bad about themselves, you boost them up! You congratulate them on reaching goals. You admire them for all of their wonderful qualities. We should do that for ourselves, too.

BA: How do you pump yourself up?

Emily: I love to dance! I get so amped up blasting music, singing and dancing around. That’s definitely my favorite way to get excited!

BA: And your favorite way to relax?

Emily: Getting together with friends and having dinner or drinks is so relaxing to me. I love just sitting around and chatting about everything that’s going on in our lives, with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I wish I could do it more often!

a1

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Emily: Sometimes it feels like the whole world is out to tear women down. I’ve found that the more time I spend trying to build up the women I meet, the more empowered I feel. It’s important that we all remind each other that we each have special gifts and talents to share with the world, and that’s what we should focus on.

BA: What does being a Bowed Arrow Babe mean to you?

Emily: I love the philosophy behind Bowed Arrows and Bowed Arrow Babes! The idea that you start with yourself is awesome. I totally agree! Being a Bowed Arrow Babe means taking care of the women in your life, including yourself.

BA: How can women in your area contact you for training and/or counseling?

Emily: Anyone can email me at emily@bodyafter.com.

BAB: Juice Queen, Angela Almaguer!

FullSizeRender (46)

Just another #WCW! We are so excited to share the amazing Angela Almaguer with you today! Angela started by making juice in her own kitchen and delivering via bicycle and now she is taking Long Beach’s juice-loving community by storm and just opened up a shop with her business partner! Check out this insanely inspiring woman. We know you’ll love her as much as we do!

FullSizeRender (50)

BA: Angela! Thank you so much for sharing your time and wisdom with us. First things first, let’s talk juice.

When did you begin Salud juice and what was the inspiration behind it?

Angela Almaguer: I started Salud Juice around 2.5 years ago after my uncle died of cardiac arrest. Shortly after he passed, my father went through a quadruple bypass heart surgery and that’s when I really started digging deep into health and wellness for my family. I started juicing for my dad and I would say “Salud a tu Salud” or “cheers to your health” every time we drank our juice together. The name for our company was almost too perfect!

BA: Describe your vision for Salud Juice.

Angela Almaguer: I originally just wanted to make sure the people who I love had full access to the vitamins and nutrients they need on a daily basis. Juicing is the easiest way to get my loved ones to consume as much healthy products as they possibly can while still having an enjoyable experience. As an added bonus, if you feel good physically, your mood starts changing with it. I want Salud to encourage a healthy lifestyle both physically and mentally.

BA: What does a day in the life of Angela Almaguer entail?

Angela Almaguer: Craziness. The end. JUST KIDDING.

It starts with checking emails, news and Instagram (we get a lot of business through Instagram and it’s a great way to keep up with our customers). I usually go over upcoming orders, meet with my “Main Squeeze” Missi and go over what the day brings. Then it’s usually a lot of juice making, juice tasting and LOTS of dancing. We like to have full dance parties while we make juice! (Just another reason we love her so much! Dance parties…always!)

BA: What’s your favorite go-to juice?

Angela Almaguer: I’m a “straight-to-the-point” kind of girl. I made a juice called “Straight Up” that is pretty much all the essential greens with a splash of lemon and ginger. It gives me all my green intake and I LOVE the heat of ginger. Can’t go wrong!

salud straight up

BA: What’s next for you and Salud?

Angela Almaguer: Right now we just want to make sure we have an amazing, fresh product that our customers really enjoy. We want to really involve ourselves in the Long Beach community because we love it so much here! Anything after that is a bonus!

BA: I’m sure we have some curious readers, so how can they get Salud Juice?

Angela Almaguer: As of right now, you can pick up at our store on the corner of 4th and Cherry in Long Beach, CA. We are, however, working on doing overnight delivery for our customers who recently moved and can’t kick the Salud addiction! We also do some personal deliveries in surrounding cities.

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey?

Angela Almaguer: A memorable moment in our journey would definitely have to be the day we signed a lease on our storefront. I had been waiting for that moment for 2 years and for it to finally come true was a very surreal feeling.

FullSizeRender (53)

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Angela Almaguer: We sell raw juice and we started primarily selling wholesale to local coffee shops and restaurants. Business was booming and we were so excited to open more accounts. Unfortunately, we didn’t know that selling raw juice wholesale was ILLEGAL! So we had to immediately pull out of all of our accounts and that was a huge HUGE defeat for us. We went from selling 500-800 bottles a week to only selling 30-40 bottles to friends and loyal customers. It was a horrific blow to the company and to my spirits.

I tried to understand that business is business and sometimes you have to tweak your business plan, dust yourself and just keep going. That’s exactly what I did. It was extremely tough for about 6 months after that, but we persevered and had such overwhelming support from friends and family that we got through it!

Enough business, let’s talk life!

BA: What did you want to be when you grew up?

Angela Almaguer: I always wanted to teach. I turned down a teaching job for this company! I still want to eventually get my PhD and teach at a university level, but I’m really having fun learning how to run a business.

BA: What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?

Angela Almaguer: Confidence is faking it until you make it! You are always going to be scared and you are always going to think you’re not ready, not good enough, not ANYTHING. But just remember that everyone around you is just as scared on the inside. Everyone is faking it!

FullSizeRender (51)

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

Angela Almaguer: MEAL PREP! The biggest mistake people make is waiting until they’re starving to think about what to eat and then driving to a drive-thru to get a quick cheeseburger. It is super important to plan out your meals so when hunger strikes, you can easily pick up a chopped salad you made that morning or a green juice you packed.

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Angela Almaguer: I like watching cartoons and cuddling with my kitty (don’t judge me!). Oh and heated yoga is my jam!

BA: And how about pumping yourself up?

Angela Almaguer: It really doesn’t take much to pump me up. But I will say that roller skating makes me feel like I’m walking on sunshine!

BA: If you could describe yourself in a song, what would it be?

Angela Almaguer: Pretty much any Beyonce girl-power song. I would say “Run the World” mostly. (One of our faves too!)

FullSizeRender (52)

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Angela Almaguer: That’s a tough one! I guess I’m kind of obsessed with heated yoga right now. It feels so good and completely clears my lungs and sinus cavity!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Angela Almaguer: Empowering women means being genuinely happy and supportive for other successful women. The female gender spends way too much time bashing on each other and that’s what keeps us weak. We are stronger as a unit.

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Angela Almaguer: Oh man I have so many quotes I live by! But if I have to choose JUST ONE it would be “life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.”

Bowed Arrow Babe: Karina of Maven Boutique LA

KarinaBAB3

We all love clothes and fun, right?! Karina brings both elements into her new business, Maven Boutique LA, by holding pop-up shops at different locations throughout Orange County and Los Angeles. She’s done private residence events which turned out FAB and then she had a few weekends in an awesome gallery in Malibu. This past weekend she held an event in Beverly Hills at a braid bar called Assembly Salon and offered free manis with every purchase! And this weekend (just in time for V-Day!) she is putting on a fashion show at Social Dry Lounge in Orange County! We will most definitely be there getting blow-outs, sipping champagne and shopping! We are all about loving ourselves on Valentine’s Day so come out and join us!

Now, time to meet the hard-working beauty behind it all!

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Karina: Well, first I just wanted to say thank you to Bowed Arrows for featuring Maven Boutique LA! My name is Karina Dyk and I’m the owner of the small Pop-Up shop. A pop-up shop sets up a store and fully takes over an empty space for a certain amount of time. What is most fun about my job is visiting different parts of the city and getting to know the people. It’s a perfect fit for me because I’ve always loved traveling and find so much beauty in my surroundings. I’ve been to over 40 states in the US, and visited different countries in South America, and Asia. My boyfriend and I are planning to go to Bali next year which is also very exciting! It’s truly the moments in my life where I’ve felt most vibrant and alive!

KarinaBABDrew

{Def one of our fav couples!}

BA: Tell us how Maven Boutique came to be.

Karina: Growing up my dad was an entrepreneur, as I watched his businesses mature I always knew someday I wanted to open up my own business. It took almost 30 years for me to truly decide what this business would be and how to get the courage to create it. I think the turning point came last fall when a co-worker of mine was questioning what he was doing with his life. Our conversation stuck with me for the next couple of months. Gradually I started to feel truly reinvigorated and found the energy to do something I loved with my time.

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and Maven.

Karina: Immediately when I came to the decision that I wanted to open a boutique, I knew I wanted to use this platform to support fashion designers, and other artisans. I became passionate about this during business school at my university where my professor taught me about Micro-financing businesses as a way to fight worldwide poverty. I got the opportunity, when I was 25 years old, and made the decision to grant my first loan to a shoemaker in Ecuador and later did grant writing for the organization. It was a rewarding experience to know that I contributed to people’s well-being and ability to create a better life for themselves and their families.

As far as the concept for Maven, I wanted to style the American woman and carry affordable clothing that was still made from quality fabrics. I like to think our Maven girl is refined and sophisticated, yet down-to-earth and fun. I believe that clothing should be cute, comfortable, and sexy to make girls feel good about themselves; both at work and on the weekends.

Maven Pop-Up Shop

BA: Where did your passion for fashion originate?

Karina:  My love for fashion was inherent since I was a little girl. While my sister was outside playing, I was in my bedroom playing dress up with Barbie’s and American Girls. I wanted to pick out their outfits, give them haircuts, and even give them makeup to make them look more beautiful. I am also a naturally creative person, and loved pairing colors and patterns. I loved drawing, reading and creating at a young age. As I grew up that energy turned into making collages, cooking, reading, and photography, and soon I wanted to be a range of professions in the industry; everything from a model to a cosmetologist to a magazine editor and a fashion designer.

Growing up, I love writing, drawing, painting, and pondering the world. I’ve always identified the struggle that comes from being a creative type, and seeing the world differently than other people. At first I hated it because it set me apart from other people. It took until recently to begin actually enjoying it and loving and accepting myself unconditionally.

BA: What are some of your favorite go-to pieces?

Karina: My philosophy is when you don’t know what to wear, stick with neutrals and accessorize. And if it’s cold put on a trench coat!

BA: What fashion trend are you currently obsessing over?

Karina: Yellow Pullover Sweaters!

BA: Any styling/fashion tips you have to share with us?

Karina: Tailor your clothes when you can, you’ll look prettier, feel better, and save money.

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to work hard towards your dreams?

Karina: My support group keeps me energized when I feel tired or discouraged. This includes my friends, family, fans, all the followers on Facebook and Instagram. A few friends have told me they are inspired to start their own businesses because of Maven and that is the best compliment I could ask for! Excitement is contagious and as they begin their journey, it inspires me all over again!

KarinaBAB2

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey thus far?

Karina: My first buy. I was so nervous about choosing the wrong pieces, and committing to a collection seemed impossible. I’m an anxious person and I am slow to make decisions, however ultimately I learned that getting my feet wet was going to hold me back and I had to jump in head first.

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Karina: Despite LOVING my job, there have been several specific times where I feel completely depleted physically and emotionally. Running a business is an all-consuming, life disrupting activity. In the past 6 months, I have made significant sacrifices: financially, professionally, and socially that I was in no way prepared for all with no guarantee that this endeavor will prove to be more than a hobby. I have learned to function on very little sleep, and very large shots of caffeine. I have doubted myself, had others doubt me, stumbled, made numerous mistakes, laughed, cried, and interrupted the lives of my family and friends for this dream, and yet, still I would say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

BA: What does a day in the life of Karina entail?

Karina: Waking up to an Americano and taking Miles, my Yorkie, on a walk. From there, everyday is different. I spend most of my time bookkeeping, preparing shipments and determined buys for the next season. I also manage the social media, website and the logistics for our Pop-Up events. Its pretty hectic but I love it! The day winds down by spending time with my boyfriend or dinner with friends.

KarinaBABMiles

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Karina: Love yourself. Trust your Gut. I don’t think there’s one path for building confidence, but if you master those two you’re on your way.

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Karina: Shopping and tea!

BA: And how about your favorite way to pump yourself up?

Karina: Turning up the music!

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

KarinaLights by Ellie Goulding. I loved it the first time I heard it, and the lyrics encompass my journey so far.

KarinaBAB

BA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Karina: If you want to make it in a man’s world, speak up in the first fifteen minutes or you’ll end up refilling the coffee.

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Karina: Hand chains!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Karina: Celebrating one another rather than competing.

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Karina: Be kind to yourself.

BA: What’s next for you?

Karina: I’m looking forward to introducing children’s clothing later this year and celebrating my thirtieth birthday!!!

Woohoo! You’re a total Babe and we are so excited for you and your future with Maven. We LOVE the philosophy behind it and cannot wait for all the shopping adventures with you, girl!

Valentine's-Pop-Up-Event-SDL

Be sure to follow Karina & Maven Boutique LA. She puts together a ton of fun events. This weekend we will be hanging out at Social Dry Lounge in Orange County! Blowouts and shopping?! What could be more fun? Especially in time to pamper yourself for L-O-V-E day!

Bowed Arrow Babe: Kylie of Once Upon A Blond

kylie2

Kylie is an absolute doll! We stumbled upon her on Instagram and have been huge fans ever since! She runs Once Upon a Blond and creates the most amazing recipes! And they are all SO healthy! We have definitely tried quite a few of them and they are to die for!  Not only is she a total doll but she always has the sweetest heart. She is a total Bowed Arrow Babe and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to her!

Sooo here you go…meet Kylie! ♥

BA: Go ahead, introduce yourself and let us know a little more about you!

Kylie: I’m Kylie, a 23 year old blogger, gymnastics teacher, model and life enthusiast living in San Diego, CA. I graduated with a Bachelors in Criminology, and have a huge passion for health and fitness. Because I love learning I knew I couldn’t stop at a Bachelors so now I’m on my way to getting my Fitness/Exercise Therapist, Nutrition, and Personal Trainer certification. I absolutely love being outdoors, my fav sports are surfing, motocross and soccer, plus I’m a total adrenaline junkie who’s completely obsessed with tigers, traveling, the ocean, and bare feet. When I’m home I’m usually creating some crazy healthy recipe… thankfully I have my wonderful Fiance as a taste tester :)

BA: Tell us how Once Upon A Blond came to be.

Kylie: I started Once Upon A Blond as a way to share my love and passion for living a healthy balanced lifestyle and to help others along their unique journeys, and I am SO glad I did! I absolutely love the community and friendships I’ve made with so many beautiful people.

BA: Describe your vision for yourself and Once Upon A Blond.

Kylie: Each day I am constantly learning, experiencing and growing into the best me that I can be and I hope Once Upon A Blond reflects that. My goal is that Once Upon A Blond not only becomes a site where you find healthy recipes, but a place of motivation, encouragement, and knowledge. I want each and every one of my followers to feel inspired, motivated, and completely capable of accomplishing their dreams.

Kylie3

[How amazing does this salad look?! Kylie rocks!]

BA: What’s a memorable moment from your journey?

Kylie: I would have to say the most memorable moment throughout my blogging journey was the first email I received asking for advice. I think it takes such a strong person to ask others for help and encouragement and that’s exactly why I created Once Upon A Blond in the first place.

BA: What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?

Kylie: Definitely finding time. Life can be so busy and unexpected that not everything always goes as planned. On my journey of health, fitness and blogging there were [and are] times where it seems impossible to get everything accomplished in one day, but I am a strong believer in making time for things that are important to you. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

BA: Where did your passion for healthy eating and fitness originate?

Kylie: My passion for healthy eating and fitness definitely developed in my high school years. I read a book on nutrition just for fun and was instantly intrigued about how much food and exercise effects our bodies, minds, and moods. I decided to test out how different I would feel if I started eating healthy and exercising daily and the changes were drastic. I instantly had more energy, my skin was wayyy clearer, my hair and nails began to grow like crazy and I was so much happier. I honestly can’t describe how much more amazing you feel when you’re treating your body right.

Kylie6

[Kylie’s Vegan Grilled Cheese – NEED THIS NOW]

BA: How do you keep yourself motivated to stay in shape?

Kylie: Instead of focusing on the negatives I always think about the positives. I encourage myself to work out by thinking about how much better i’ll feel after or how much energy i’ll have the next day. The way you talk to yourself is so important and you should always talk to yourself like you would to someone you love, it is honestly the strongest motivator!

BA: What is your favorite go-to healthy food?

Kylie: Avocados. I LOVE avocados. I eat at least one a day, completely plain with an occasional dash of sea salt. Besides the fact that they taste great, they are also AMAZING for you!

BA: Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?

Kylie: I guess my #1 tip would be to always make time to do the things you love, because to me a healthy lifestyle is a lifestyle full of happiness… not just fruits, vegetables and a daily run.

Kylie

[The total package – dirt biker, surfer, amazing cook, giant heart of gold]

BA: What does a day in the life of Kylie entail?

Kylie: Ahhh this is such a hard one because each of my days are so different from the next, but almost all of them start with some kind of breakfast smoothie and granola. Then it’s time for work! Sometimes I’ll work out during my lunch break, or once I am home I’ll go to the gym or workout outside. I LOVE hiking, biking and running around my neighborhood because there are tons of trails and mountains [Usually my Fiance joins me if he’s off work in time!]. Then we have dinner, maybe watch a movie, play cards, or just talk until were tired. Lately I have been meditating before bed and I am obsessed with how relaxed I feel [anddd how much better I sleep]!!

BA: You just got engaged, congrats! How did you meet your fiance meet? Any tips for keeping your relationship fun and exciting?

Kylie: I met my fiance during my best friends birthday trip to Mexico, her parents and his were mutual friends so he volunteered to show us around for the weekend. We ended up having tons in common, stayed in touch and began dating a few months later. We’ve now been dating over two years and he just proposed in the most romantic way possible.

My best tip for keeping a relationship fun and exciting is to go out and do things together! Don’t get stuck in the same routine. Make sure you continue to try new things together, go to new places, grow and learn together.

Kylie4

[How cute are they?!]

BA: Have you started wedding planning yet? Any tips for girls planning their own wedding?

Kylie: I have started planning! We actually just picked our date and location and I couldn’t be more excited! Planning a wedding is SO much fun, but can easily get overwhelming. My best tip would be to create a list of all the things you need to find and do by your wedding day and the date they have to be done by. I can’t tell you how much this list has helped me, I know what I’ve already done and what I need to do next. It definitely makes things less stressful.

BA: Best tip for boosting self-confidence?

Kylie: Focus on what you love about yourself and pay no attention to the negatives. And again, make sure that you are doing whats best for you and everything else will fall into place. I’m not saying to be greedy and ONLY think of yourself, but definitely make time for your own happiness. So, if that means letting the laundry sit there an extra day so that you can squeeze in a quick workout then that’s what you should do. When you make time for the things you love, and you take pride in yourself and your happiness, your confidence will shine and reflect on others.

BA: What’s your favorite way to relax?

Kylie: Lately it has been meditation. I just started meditating but I am completely in love with it and it has made me so much more relaxed. If you’ve never mediated before there are awesome videos on youtube that will take you through a guided meditation!

BA: And how about your favorite way to pump yourself up?

Kylie: Music. Definitely music. There are some songs that I can’t help but to sing along with or dance to. They immediately lift my spirits and energy!

Kylie5

[HEALTHY, RAW COOKIE DOUGH! You must check our her blog!]

BA: If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?

Kylie: Oh this is SO hard.

I feel like I can relate to so many songs, but my absolute favorite is Annie Bosko’s “Crooked Halo”. The first time I heard it I listened to every single word. I love it. I love how Annie shows women that you don’t have to be one thing. You can be sweet and stubborn, girly, yet a total tom boy, or a homebody with a gypsy soul. The important thing is to be yourself and to know who you are.

BA: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Kylie:  I’m pretty sure I read this in one of my high school planners, but I wrote it down and have kept it forever.

“If we remembered everyday that we could lose someone at any moment, we would love them more fiercely and freely, and without fear – not because there is nothing to lose but because everything can always be lost.”

I am in love with this quote. It reminds me that there is nothing more important in life than love and whom we share it with. It’s so easy to get caught up in the glitter and glam that money offers, but no amount of money can replace the memories, laughs and love we share with others.

BA: Something you are totally obsessed with right now?

Kylie: Face sunscreen. I am OBSESSED. I absolutely love the sun and I’m pretty sure 95% of my days are spent at the beach. I’ve always known that the sun wasn’t great for your skin but lately some of my relatives have been showing signs of skin cancer so I have become super careful about how much sun exposure my skin gets. Especially my face and neck! Plus sunscreen helps prevent premature aging, wrinkles and sun spots!

BA: What does empowering women mean to you?

Kylie: To me empowering women is supporting them in their hopes, dreams and desires. Women are so hard on each other, when in reality it should be the opposite. Women understand women best, so why not use that understanding to inspire and encourage each other. Whether it be through kind words, support, opportunities, or a simple smile , when we stand behind each other amazing things are accomplished.

Kylie7

[Some of Kylie’s AMAZING healthy recipes]

BA: If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?

Kylie: Ditch the jealousy, don’t judge and simply be nice to each other. The world will be a much better place because of it, I promise.

BA: What’s next for you?

Kylie: Right now I am in the process of moving to Mexico! And I am so excited to explore the land and culture so I am sure my blog will reflect that! But that’s just the start of whats coming next, there are SO many things I want to do and have already started doing we’ll just have to wait and see what I finish first! :)

Good luck to you, Kylie! We are SO excited to see what the future brings for such a kind, beautiful soul like yourself! xx

Be sure to follow Kylie on her journey:)

::How old were you when you decided that modeling was something you wanted to do?::

I was 14 years old when I started. I had always been interested in modeling and had received comments from friends and family that I should look into it so my mom and I went to several agencies in Colorado where I grew up and the first one I met with signed me and I began modeling right away!

::Where did this passion originate?::

I’ve always loved fashion even when I was a little girl. I would play dress up and put on fashion shows for my parents and dress my little brothers in outfits too, poor guys! I just loved being creative. My dad also would film everything as we were growing up to document our lives and so I think I got used to being in front of a camera from a very young age and always loved it.

::What’s a memorable moment from your journey?::

The most memorable and unique modeling job I had was when I traveled to Hong Kong with the company prAna to model their new swimwear line that they had just made. I was only out there for 2.5 days but I loved every bit of the culture and people and seeing that part of the world.

::What were your biggest hardships on your journey to where you are now? How did you overcome them?::

Probably the biggest hardship that I faced in the modeling world was the issue of your image and trying to be perfect for everyone. When I first started I was 14 and like a sponge, I soaked in everything that every agent, client and other model told me, both positive and negative. Everyone has different opinions in this industry of what is healthy and what’s not, what looks good and what doesn’t and they have no fear of telling you. Before I knew it I was super unhappy with my body and my look simply from taking to heart all the negative comments from others and letting them outweigh all the positive ones. I developed very unhealthy eating patterns and exercise regimes in order to be the perfect model and have the perfect look for everyone. But that was the catch 22; I realized that if you try to be everyone’s version of perfect you are going to lose yourself in the mess and never be happy or good enough. Psalm 139:14 says “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This verse means the world to me and turned my perspective around. We are all wonderfully made by God and what He creates is perfection, there are no mistakes. I now measure myself up to God’s standards and not the world’s standards because I know God made me perfectly. Today I’ve never been happier and surprisingly never worked more simply from keeping my focus in the right place and not yielding to what everyone wants or what every person thinks is perfect.

::You just got married! Congrats! You and Dusty make the most beautiful couple! How did you both meet?::

Aww well thank you so much! I absolutely adore him! Dusty and I met through one of my girlfriends that I modeled with. She had just met him in passing and knew his sister briefly so the fact that she thought of him and I as being a good match was a work of the Lord, seriously! She started to tell me about him on a job one day and how she thought we would be great together and that I should come up and meet him. I was living in Newport Beach at the time and he was in Santa Barbara (where my girlfriend was from too). So the following weekend I came up to Santa Barbara and we all went to their friend’s birthday party, which turned out to be a cowboys and indians themed party. I dressed as an indian and he was a cowboy. As soon as I met him I remember this surreal feeling coming over me that he was going to be the man I married. We talked the rest of that night and hung out the whole next day and sure enough a year later he asked me to marry him. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me:)

::Any advice to keep your relationship fun and exciting?::

Now that Dusty and I are married we are super busy with everyday life and don’t always get as much time together each day as we would like. Quality time together is so important to us so we always make sure to schedule a date night once a week. Just because you are married doesn’t mean you stop dating! We enjoy working out together too and putting each other through circuits we make up. We also catch up on each others days once we are in bed and will talk for a bit, read our bible together and finish up by praying with each other every night. We love this time together because no matter what our day was like it unifies us and keeps us on the same page.

::We’ve always been so amazed at your faith and how you carry it through your everyday life. You’re a true inspiration. Have you ever encountered any push-back for this? If so, how did you handle it?::

Well thank you very much, that means a lot! I definitely have encountered push-back at times for my faith, especially in the modeling world. I don’t shoot any lingerie and am very careful with which bikini companies I work with due to the fact that everything is getting more and more risqué nowadays. I feel that your body is a temple for the Lord and that He lives in you guiding you and leading you everyday and the way we treat our bodies and portray ourselves says a lot about us. I feel that lingerie should be for my husband’s eyes only and I have encountered a lot of resistance for that with certain agencies and clients because of the fact that I have a body that works great for lingerie and swim. I’ve learned to stand up for what I believe in no matter how much resistance I get for it or how much money I lose because in the end my relationship with the Lord is the most important thing to me! I’d rather be an example for young women whether they are believers or not and the best way to do that is to make a stand and not succumb under pressure so you can be the example they look up to. You may be the only walking Bible that some people see/read; I always want to make sure I am the proper representation for others of that and not leading them astray:)

::What does confidence mean to you and how do you achieve it?::

Confidence is loving yourself and who God made you to be and walking in that with a smile on your face, grace in your heart and truth on your lips. I achieve confidence by putting God first and not taking life or other people too seriously.

::Any tips to supplement a healthy lifestyle for the other busy girls of the world?::

Yes we all know that life can get tremendously busy! But that doesn’t mean you can’t keep in shape and stay healthy at the same time. Whenever I’m on the go, traveling for jobs or running between castings, I try to find creative ways to get my heart rate up a bit. For example I’ll park my car and get out and do jumping jacks for 5-10 minutes in an abandoned lot or nearby park. I’ll do exercises in my hotel room and use any props that  are nearby (be creative). When I have days with a little more time I’ll go for a run along the bike path by the beach where I live or take a kickboxing class or go for a quick hike in the hills. I really like variety. Exercising for 10-20 minutes is better than not at all on a busy day so any time I can get my heart rate up I do it!

::Favorite go-to healthy food?::

Acai Bowls with raw almonds on top.

Oh my gosh, we loveeee acai bowls! Great choice!!

::What’s your favorite way to relax?::

Go for a beach walk with my husband and then come back home and take a hot bath with candles lit. The ocean is one of my favorite places ever and who doesn’t like hot baths?!

Hot baths and red wine are one of our favorites!

::And how about pumping yourself up?::

I always read my devotionals in the morning to align my focus and set my mind straight for the day. My favorite one is called Jesus Calling.

We love the daily devotionals. Chantelly still has the book you gave her when she moved back from Nebraska! It’s such a great way to start your day!

::If you could pick one song to describe yourself, what would it be?::

Love Like Crazy by Lee Brice, specifically the verse “Never let your praying knees get lazy, and love like crazy.”

::Something you are totally obsessed with right now?::

Beaded and sequined clothing! No matter where I go if I see clothes with a touch of glitz or sparkle I have to stop in and shop.

You do have the greatest clothes! Love your style, girl!

::What does empowering women mean to you?::

It means giving women the motivation, drive, determination and opportunity to be their best selves and to encourage others to do the same. Women who love themselves and strive to make the world better are the most beautiful!

::If you could tell all women everywhere one thing, what would it be?::

To love yourself fully and who God has made you to be and to use the gifts He has given you to make this world better! Jeremiah 29:11 😉

That’s SO perfect!

You’re such an inspiration, Fal! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule! We are so glad to have had the opportunity to feature you here.
