Babes, today we are introducing you to Jen Herter of Macoranage in San Diego. We have had the pleasure of knowing Jen since junior high school and have loved watching her journey from turning her passion into a business. Meet Jen!

BA: Where did you first get the inspiration to start your own business?

J: I’ve always loved business in general which is why I got my degree in Business Administration from Point Loma Nazarene University. However, I knew that in order to start my own business and have it be successful it would have to be something that I was truly passionate about. I’ve always loved cooking and good food, but it wasn’t until after college that I really focused in on pastry. I got inspired by the amazing restaurants in San Diego and watching way too much Food Network so finally I decided I wanted to start a bakery. In order to learn the technique and get the knowledge I would need to run a bakery, I attend The French Pastry School in Chicago. It was at pastry school when I decided to focus on french macarons.

BA: The macarons always look so delicious. Is that just your speciality or do you strictly stick to macarons?

J: Right now I only do macarons. Macarons are tricky to make so I like the challenge and niche market. Plus focusing on just macarons allows me to really play with flavor and designs. We offer macarons a la cart, macaron favors and macaron towers. I’ve always taken the approach that it’s better to do one thing exceptionally well than a bunch of things just average.

BA: What are some challenges you faced starting a company on your own?

J: It’s always a lot more work and a lot more money than you expect it to be. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring out how to get started. It truly has to be a labor of love.

BA: You are based in San Diego but do you have any plans of getting your delicious treats to other areas?

J: We currently serve the San Diego and Temecula area. At this time, there’s more than enough business for me in just these locations!

BA: Where should the fine people of San Diego go to grab some yummy macarons?

J: Because we completely customize the macarons for each order, we focus on weddings and events only. We have a minimum order of 50 macarons or more which includes free delivery within San Diego county. We typically set up a tasting with customers prior to their wedding or event where they can try 5 flavors. At the tasting we discuss more about their wedding/event and the specifics.

BA: Tell us about pastry school? That sounds fun…and dangerous.

J: It was fun and dangerous because you take home everything you make and let me just say, my diet was about 90% carbs and sugar during that time. So of course it was amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. It also didn’t hurt that it was in Chicago so I constantly had friends visit me.

BA: You recently got married. Is your husband your guinea pig for new recipes?

J: Most definitely, although he’s not the best judge because he says “everything you touch turns to gold”. So sweet, but so not true.

BA: Was starting your own company always a dream of yours?

J: YES!!!!

BA: What’s next for you and Macaronage?

J: I plan on continuing to grow my business in the weddings and events markets. I really enjoy working with brides and grooms and it’s such a huge industry.

BA: What are some tricks you use for balancing a busy life?

J: Hahaha I wish I knew. It helps that I really like being busy and I love being creative. Sometimes I do get overwhelmed but I’ve been getting better at saying “no” to things as of late.

BA: Any healthy tips for the rest of us sweets lovers?

J: Everything in moderation. I love sweets and eat dessert every day but I try to limit the portion size of my dessert. That means 1 or 2 macarons instead of 3 or 4. Also, exercise is just a good thing.

BA: What’s your favorite way to pump yourself or turn your mood around?

J: Working out always turns my frown upside down. Also, creative projects in general help me unwind most of the time.

BA: What about your favorite way to wind down?

J: My husband and I love TV. I know that’s not a great thing to admit to but we have a few shows we really enjoy watching together. (BA says this in moderation isn’t such a bad thing!)

BA: Best advice you were ever given?

J: I think my parents really did a good job encouraging me to take educated risks. Do your research and plan first but don’t be afraid to trust your gut. Failing is just a learning experience.

11910020_1545428039045865_1849160763_n

BA: Who is your biggest inspiration?

J: I don’t really have one person that inspires me except for Jesus. I think there are pieces of a lot of great people that inspire me in different ways. I want to take the best qualities from all the great people around me and become that person.

BA: If you could tell all women and girls everywhere one thing, what would it be?

J: You’ve got to be your own biggest fan. You are valuable and talented and full of potential so act like it.

TIPS: Cut calories in your 4th of July cocktails!

295486_3645519290466_986976977_n

We LOVE holidays and the 4th of July is one of our favorites!

What better way to celebrate living in freedom than throwing an All-American Party?!

Independence Day is always full of BBQs, bike rides and usually…beer or some other form of calorie-laden cocktails.

We don’t want to stop the celebration, but we were searching for a way to not feel bloated and lethargic by days end, so we went to the cocktail drawing board for a couple of Red, White and Blue libations!

Watermelon-Lime Cooler:

IMG_8323

1.5 ounces of the vodka of your choice

1/3 cup of fresh watermelon chunks

1 tbsp fresh lime juice

IMG_8325

Shake with Ice

Top with Arrowhead Watermelon-Lime Sparkling Water

This cocktail is so refreshing and not too sweet!

IMG_8330

Berry-Bubbly:

5 ounces of bubbles (We LOVE Chandon..Rose would be great too!)

IMG_8305

2 ounces of your fave berries

2 ounces of Suja Berry Madness

IMG_8311

Stir and sip!

For those with a more sweet-tooth!

IMG_8314

It’s not just the cocktails that can break the calorie bank…

Those hot dogs and burgers are about as American as it gets, but they can make you feel all sorts of sluggish.

Try turkey burgers or Applegate’s all-natural dogs! They have chicken, turkey, pork, beef or veggie and they are made without GMOs or artificial ingredients! Now that’s a BBQ we can feel good about!

Turn-off and Stop to Smell the Roses!

FullSizeRender (1)

Babes,

We have had a rough week. We lost a member of our animal family and it has been rough. Emma entered our lives 9 years ago and has been such a funny and spirited part of our family. Her passing was unexpected and very sad, but we decided to take some time to remember all of the wonderful memories we had with her. As silly as it sounds, I (Jenna) learned one really important lesson from my dog: Stop to smell the roses. It’s an old saying but one that Emma really practiced well. Every walk and adventure outside, she would stop to smell literally every single rose, bush and mailbox. Now, I know that she was a dog and it’s something that dogs just do, but it was pretty inspiring.

A few years ago after I noticed how my walks with Emma that should have been 10 minutes turned into an hour, I began to really appreciate the world and the neighborhood through her eyes. She wasn’t in a hurry. She was so curious. These walks were our time together and in such a busy world, I sometimes forgot that these walks were her world. I stopped getting frustrated with her after that realization. I started loving that she wanted to stop and explore and smell everything.

This past weekend I was traveling and I had 2 hours to spare in the Miami airport. Normally I would sit on Instagram while I ate something quick and convenient, but I decided to do something different this time. I went to eat by myself and didn’t touch my phone the entire time. I just sat and ate and listened to my thoughts and enjoyed the delicious food in front of me. After that, I wandered around the Miami airport and discovered some incredible artwork. Most people are rushing through airports and probably never realize that there is actually a lot to appreciate and not just terminals.

It’s important that we take the time to appreciate our surroundings. There is so much beauty, culture and love in the world. Take the time to look around you, stop to smell every flower, look at every picture, taste every bite, feel every kiss. The world and your life have a lot to offer, sometimes you just need to open your eyes and your mind a little more to realize it.

Be grateful and cherish every moment!

Cuddle your pets a little longer for us tonight!

New Fave: Danielle Guizio Duffel Bag

FullSizeRender (31)

Y’all know how much we love Nasty Gal, right? Well today our Friday Fave gives us ANOTHER reason to love Nasty Gal because of their addition of Danielle Guizio’s hilarious and truthful duffel bag.

FullSizeRender (31)

And since the bag says exactly how we feel when we aren’t in the comfort of our own home, we decided to give you some tips on how to stick with your routine when you aren’t at home.

Keeping a toiletry bag stocked and ready for spontaneous overnight trips is a great way to stick to your routine.

Here’s what you need:

1) Toothbrush/toothpaste: Not everyone will remember the toothpaste and none of us want to wake up with nasty breath! Keep an extra toothbrush in your toiletry bag so you don’t forget or leave behind the good one you keep at home.

2) Makeup wipes: A MUST! Late nights can make us lazy and the last thing you want is to leave your makeup on overnight. This can lead to major breakouts and clogged pores! Plus, you’ll wake up looking like a clown.

drunk makeup
Yep. That’s what it looks like.

3) Tampons: Oh dear heavens. Surprise visits from Aunt Flow with no equipment is terrifying. Always, ALWAYS, keep tampons on hand.

4) Tums/Motrin/Rolaids: Because nothing is worse than being sick and uncomfortable when you aren’t in the comfort of your own home.

5) A Good Book or a Notebook: If you have to be left alone, or the power goes out or you just need some quiet time, make sure you have something to keep your brain from going crazy. Perfect time to read or write!

mindy kaling book
We love Mindy Kaling! This book is hilarious!

6) Extra underwear: You can wear the same jeans for a few days, but for the sake of your lady parts…bring extra panties!

7) Swimsuit: You don’t want to be the only one who can’t go swimming. And it will prevent that awkward “Just go in your underwear” comment.

8) Moisturizer with Sunscreen: Dry skin is unbearable and so are sunburns! Even in cold weather, sunburns can still happen, so it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Will-Ferrell-sunburn
Ouch!

9) Deodorant: No explanation needed.

10) Trail Mix: Seriously. How many times have you been on someone else’s schedule and STARVING. Pack a homemade trail mix ( we like almonds, dark chocolate and dried cranberries) to hold you over if you find yourself without food or just needing a quick pick me up.

Whatever your weekend or spontaneity brings, make sure you are prepared but also have a good attitude regardless of what happens. Not having your essentials shouldn’t be cause for a bad time, but hopefully this list will help you remember everything. Make the most of it and have fun! Enjoy your weekend, babes!

Tips Tuesday: All about Interviews!

answer_tough_interview_questions-100339683-orig

Welcome to Tips Tuesdays, Babes!

We have something very exciting and scary to talk about…INTERVIEWS!

Even when you know you are a shoe in, interviews are terrifying. You start to doubt yourself, you obsess over what to wear and what to say and sometimes…you don’t get the job. Whether it be a bad fit or just not meshing with the interviewer, sometimes it doesn’t work out, and you can’t get yourself down about it. You pick yourself, apply for something else and keep kicking ass!

There are, however, a few things that can help you feel more confident and make you look better to the person interviewing you.

1) Get enough sleep the night before. Just like the night before your first day of school or a big test, listen to the tried and true tips. Get your 8 hours in and wake up early enough to eat a good breakfast, have your coffee, prep yourself and walk out the door feeling like a million bucks!

sleepbaby

2) As for breakfast…lay off the sugar! Sugar makes you crash and nothing could be worse than going into an interview feeling great and then getting your sugar downfall half way through. Stick to energizing foods like apples, oranges, greek yogurt and even toast with jam (which increases serotonin…your body’s own happy hormone!) Don’t discount caffeine with that sugar either. Try green tea or take it easy on the cream and sugar in your coffee!

3) Your outfit says a lot about you and your work ethic. When you go into an interview looking like you are ready for a date, it can send the wrong message. You want to look and feel great, but not like you are trying to get a bunch of attention (or the wrong kind of attention). Stick to classic, conservative, yet modern pieces. Neutral colors, blazers and nothing too tight! We love Lauren Conrad, so click here for some of her tips on how to dress for an interview. Pinterest also has some great ideas if you search “interview outfits”.

interview outfit
One of Jenna’s “go-to” outfits. She asks that you not judge her on the bathroom selfie. It’s the only full length mirror in the house and she hates taking pictures of herself.

4) Less is more. Natural makeup is the best route. Interviews are not the time to try out your new hot pink lipstick or glitter eyeshadow. No perfume! Not only can it be disrespectful for someone who has allergies or a sensitive nose, but it can be distracting and sometimes we don’t realize how strong our scent is. Take a nice warm shower before you get ready and you should smell great without the added scent! Nails should be minimalistic as well. No bright colors, crazy designs or super long nails. It doesn’t have to be boring, just not extreme. We love OPI “Mod About You” & Essie “Demure Vixen”.

OPI Mod about you
Just enough pink!

5) Show up early…but not too early. 10 to 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview time is perfect. You want to seem eager and excited, but it’s awkward when you show up too early. Don’t forget to include driving time. Tack on a little extra time just in case there is traffic or unforeseen hiccups in your travel. Nothing will look worse than showing up late before you even get the job!

6) Be prepared. Research the company and position you are applying for, but still ask questions. Interviewers always end with “Do you have any questions?” and you should ALWAYS have questions. Keep in mind though, don’t ask about money or time off. Ask about room for growth or how they got started with the company. Your questions should showcase your eagerness to work for them, not your eagerness to make money and take time off.

7) Be confident. Just as you would when it comes to attracting someone you like, be yourself and be confident. People get hired, not resumes. You are amazing and have so much to offer, so let your future employer see that. When we get nervous we tend to ramble, twitch or have weird ticks that we don’t notice but everyone else does! Listen to some of your favorite pump-up jams on your way, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself of just how awesome you are & how much you deserve the job right before you go in.

whos-awesome

We hope this helps for any of you on the hunt for the perfect job right now! It’s always a daunting task but with the right tools and the right attitude, you can have that job in the bag!

Good luck and happy hunting, babes!
